p4 tribune march 21 1990 participate to improve stouffville it seems is blessed with people who feel a duty to get involved and the merits of civic partici pation were no more evident than last week when stouffville resi dent darrell rolls helped lead police to the capture of a murder suspect the results of his action quickly brought to an end a police man hunt which could have lasted for days and cost taxpayers gross sums of money but whether participation relates to fighting crime or volunteering for a worthy cause- the benefits are gratifying and its the community in which we live that benefits from the self less participation of a few in stouffville there are numerous organizations that ask for help in the pages of this newspaper every week arid larger regionwide organi zations need a boost in the stouf fville area as well none require huge time commit ments or specialized skills all offer some sort- of benefit to various members of the stouffville community darrell rolls decided he could do something to help if more peo ple did the same wed all win miracle of birth brings friends closer her name ismeg elizabeth grace baker when i first saw meg i couldnt believe she witnessed daily occurrences of impatient and inconsiderate drivers who will not abide by the 60 kmhr speed limit posted in the area nei ther do they obey the solidyellow line i felt that if i drove at the speed limit someone either rearend me or forceme off the road last week it happened two impatient drivers behind me both pulled out at once to pass because i was doing the speed limit they bounced off each other and then one collided with my car spin- ning it into the west culvert and causing 4000 damage fortunately i did not spin into the large eastern ditch or a hydro pole it was only through the grace of god that we were riot killed or worse permanently disabled for what for power to be on time what has made drivers so aggressive what makes people think the rules of the road dont apply to them are they not aware that driving 10 kmhr over the speed limit can result in a 25 fine or that 20 kmhr over is 75 and 30 kmhr is 11250 plus demerit points the two drivers involved were under age 25 last year people were complaining that those under that age should not be discriminat- ed against and should pay the same insurance premiums as those over age 25 in all fairness i have seen all ages and all kinds of drivers the one i couldnt believe though was a riiother with her baby in the front seat who was travelling 40 kmhr over the speed limit frorn the beginning of 9th line south to hwy 7 the speed limit changes from 50 kmhr to 80 kmhr to 60 kmhr to 80 kmhr and back to i 60kmr this contributes to drivers becoming frustrated- with the new traffic generated by the hospital this road will become even more of a death trap thisroad is not unique the gen eral driving population in the toronto area have the same atti tude get out of my way being involved in this accident has forced me to take action i hope it will make drivers think the next time they have to pass the car in front just so they can be first that its not worth it sincerely karen mcvittie-
