stouffville sports teams he admits its more a matter of the head than of the heart until he starts to talk about the one that got away marvin has always seen his stable of baseball hockey soccer and other betz pools backed teams or individuals as a simple combination of corporate responsibility and good business sense when asked just how many betz sponsorships comprise the sum total of the companys commitment he confesses he honestly doesnt know off hand he mentions the betz pools oldtimers classics hockey team along with his junior c girls pucksters his mens sunday morning squad and the bantam house league outfit then theres the girls slopitch and soccer house league teams the partial sponsorship of local moto- cross ace todd townend and his backing of canam midget racer dan bound theres probably something else he suggested but i dont remember you get the impression though that hed trade them all in on his recentlydisbanded betz pools mens fastball team these teams are part of my corporate duty he insists but the ball team that was personal involvement and he knows hes going to miss the diamond action i still cant believe im not going to have a team this year he said he admitted he has left the door open however for the possible combination of eager local ball players and a willing sponsor or two to get the thing back on track we still have our diamond slot for this year he pointed out id like to help find someone else to set up another mens fastball team here there are some people who might be interested and given some time to think about it they still might come forth we may go back at it i want a year to think about it betz said he had assembled a club which would have been one of the 10 best in ontario this season but the local flavor was fading fast as more and more outsiders were being brought in to fill the roster we would have had a fineball team but it wouldnt have been local he said we always wanted to put together something like the old junior team that was the initial idea gone are the days of 1987 when the betz pools platoon took the provincial title with the likes of stouffvilles flamethrowing pitcher jimmy chilvers the grant brothers mark fockler and others in their first year together betz had to make a decision whether to embark on a win at all costs campaign luring the out-of- town phenoms with offers of benefits as is so often done at the upper levels or to simply fold his tent as it turns out it was an easy choice we never paid anybody a dime to play here he said but it was coming to that now that he wont be spending the money or the time on his cherished ball club betz said hell be able to supply himself with other interests such as skeet shooting and duck hunting he figures hell be able to redirect much of what was usually a full day a week on baseball matters to such pursuits as ducks unlimited and he thinks it might be time to look at his many sponsorships with an eye to fiscal responsibility i dont know if i can take on any more teams he said especially if his hearts not in it 4h stouffvilles atom clipper teams grabbed a gold and a silver at saturdays uxbridge atom hockey tournament the
