st coop gives stouffville student tools of the trade the tribune wednesday february 7 1990 bruce stapley correspondent tammy davidson is going against the flow the 18yearold stouffville district secondary school grade 12 student is one of 50 students taking part in the schools co operative education program which gives teens the chance to spend every second afternoon working at a job they might even tually pursue as a career but rather than heading out to an office or a workplace tradi tionally open to women tammy chose stouffvilles firestone auto centre as her placement site last september now in her third year as ah auto mechanics student at sdss tammy hopes to enroll in centen nial colleges auto mechanics program when she graduates and she says her experience at firestone was just the icing on the cake in terms of making her decision i wanted to find out what mechanics would be like before taking it at college says tam my whose father is a mechanic with spademan waste disposal and this has shown me that i like it so im going to stay with it tammy enrolled in her schools basic level auto mechanics pro gram in grade 10 as a filler course at first i didnt know what to expect there were just four girls there but by the end of the year i found that i liked it she followed it up by taking auto electrical in grade 11 and this year has been used as a teachers assistant in her grade 12 course photo bruce stapley stouffville district secondary school student tammy davidson checks a monitor while working on a cooperative education placement at stouffvilles firestone auto centre tammy 18 has been studying auto mechanics since grade 10 and hopes to become a mechanic some day the firestone coop placement says she decided to choose the car repair centre after talking to a male student who went the same route last year he had liked it so i talked to steve langlois firestone manager he was a little sur prised when he found out i was a girl and while tammy has been pressed into service repairing tires changing oil and helping with brake repairs mr langlois says he has been pleased with both tammys work and the co op concept i cant complain at all he of fers its a great program they get to see if they like the trade we had one coop student go on to become foreman of one of our shops in toronto mr langlois says he could even see tammy someday becoming an auto technician punching the buttons on the scope machine then telling the mechanics what to change or repair mary francisjuk co ordinator of the coop program at sdss feels that tammys non conformist placement might just set a precedent in school its the first time weve had a female in a nontraditional place ment im very pleased because there is a need for more females in the trades right now they make up only about four per cent tammy admits some customers are a little surprised when they see her in the shop and that people often ask her why she wants to be a mechanic i could never handle a desk job or being on the phone a lot and most people just dont want to give tech a try is feeling the squeeze so weve just made room for more numbers the 416 calling area is one of the fastest growing regions in north america this substantial and rapid growth in demand for residen tial business and cellular telephones makes it necessary to change dialing procedures for long distance calls in the 416 dialing area beginning march 1 it will be necessary to dial 1 then 416 or 0 then 416 for operator assisted calls when making a long distance call within the 416 area for example the old way to dial 1555 6789 the new way to dial 14165556789 this simple change will allow us to use existing area codes such as 505 or 713 as new exchanges making more numbers available for customers and of course your long distance charges will in no way be affected by this change in dialing procedure because of this change it is very important that you remember to adjust your telephones and business machines automatic dialers fax machines and other equipment that may have preprogrammed telephone numbers dont forget to tell friends and family about this change in dialing procedure as we want to make sure that getting in touch with loved ones is as easy as ever get ready for march 1 and get started now dial 1 416 or 0416 when dialing a long distance number within the 416 area code thanks for making this change and if you have any questions please give us a call at 1 8004651416 igi0ioq bell
