recollection of something that would probably be better left in the past in terms of sporting excellence the announcement was of the 16th annual winters competi tion and the stouffville group responsible for this unique day of ski racing at the hidden valley ski resort near huntsville bore a strange resemblance in name to that collection of robust rogues and reprobates i had once got conned into joining about a decade ago it would appear that the old and rather infamous stouffville ski racing and yacht club has expanded its name to the un wieldy stouffville ski racing tennis yachting volleyball marching and chowder society a veritable dogs breakfast of pretentiousness if ive ever seen one anyway the boys have secured 15 guest passes for this years ski challenge races and story telling competition scheduled for feb 23 the deadline for sign ing up is today wednesday according to group spokesmen dave stronach and stan newmarch the junket will begin with a ski tuning session com plete with training and turning films new for 1990 at the newmarch ski race prep centre feb 15 in preparation for another years outstanding event the 60 stipend includes meals sport notes bruce stapley and all rentals and lessons which gives you an indication of the calibre of skiing expected and if my memory serves me correct even the expert skiers like stan newmarch tend to be a stride or two below top form for the slalom race around which the day supposedly evolves something to do with the pre- race party that goes into the wee hours the night before at the newmarch ski chalet if my memory serves me cor rectly this will be yet another chapter in the ongoing life rivalry between exstouffvillite and renowned sportsman gord ness and his nemesis bloomingtons bob lewis these two have traditionally resorted to the most extreme psyche out measures in an effort to best each other in the slalom event the loser has always been forced to make good on prerace promises that make toronto mayor art eggletons wearing of an oakland as shirt for a day after the as beat the blue jays look like a reprieve the report goes on to say that the ski challenge races awards along with the story telling com petition will be held as usual in the hidden valley ski clubs members lounge with the usual bad jokes and unexpected race times when its all over the ladies will get their turn march 2 with sandy stronach quarterbacking that outing from her freckles gift boutique on stouffvilles main street in typical friendly stouffville tradition both the men and women will be offered accomoda tion at chez newmarch the night before race day just another example of those in our town who live on the ragg ed edge that comes with the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat interested
