ched junior slinky a joke dagger with the spring missing and an apparently selfperpetuating tribe of pine needles which have mysteriously found their way in to your socks and underwear the warm glow v family togetherness which lasted all the way from christmas eve to box ing day morning has evaporated like money from your bank ac count along with the unnatural prechristmas spic and span- ness of newlypolished furniture and fingerprintfree glass on the french doors smoke from the romantic open fire has been replaced with smoke coming out of the ears of your spouse whos just received the first of many unpleasant shocks courtesy of visa or mastercard a few forlorn christmas cards still show up in your mailbox along with demands for money and an urgent notice reminding you that your national university sharon dane rates corner kate gilderdale longer use the festive season as an excuse for procrastination i could cope with all this angst were it not for the fact that the realities of endless winter can no longer be ignored already articles are springing up all over the place advising of the best ski resorts undiscovered outdoor rinks and super toboggan runs and my best friends are busy trying to set up jolly get- togethers filled with physical ac tivities most of which will result in frozen fingers a bruised tail bone and a battered ego all in the guise of making the most of winter about four years ago i decided to buy some skates just about every homegrown canadian could skate i reasoned so it couldnt be that difficult what id failed to take into ac count is that falling from a height of two feet is a lot less painful than crashing spectacularly from fivefoot five not to mention the ignominy of performing the stunt in front of an amazed group of skilled skaters most of them under the age of 12 on one of my outings to cedarena as i shuffled around the perimeter of the rink clinging desperately to the fence i ac quired a small coterie of amused male cheerleaders on my fourth round one of them kindly remarked that if i returned to the entrance he was sure i would be given my money back after a few similarly humiliating experiences i decid ed to go against the grain at the risk of spending winter alone i was finally prepared to admit that snow and ice for me were meant to be admired from the warm and safe cocoon of the liv- friends happy to boy is improving little bumps on it two months ago i discovered i wasnt alone i finally met a nativeborn canadian who thought that snow belonged on christmas cards and people belonged in front of a warm fire the relief at being able to share my idiosyncracy with an unashamed advocate of the great indoors was akin to finding that i hadnt locked my keys in the car after ad im with jonathan miller who once
