for a school handicapped by a perennial shortage of athletic facilities stouffville district secondary school sdss is do ing its level best to imitate a three ring sports attraction cir cus these days with two sdss boys volleyball teams hosting durhamyork title tournaments on successive weeks and basketball activity that has the schools two girls teams gunning for regional championships the boards on the old gym floor are taking a poun ding of late and as if thesv teams arent providing entertainment enough the phys ed department lined up a basketball game last wednesday between the schools hot shot teachers and students and the in famous harlem diplomats which if nothing else gave teacher jim fletcher a chance to gain a longawaited measure of revenge for having his gym shorts pulled down on the basket ball court by one of those same diplomats some 20 years ago when fleich was a green grade 13 eager with gym time as scarce as hens teeth these days the spar tan volleyball and basketball squads are being forced to burn the candle at both ends practices are scheduled for anywhere from 7 am through 730 pm and speaking of getting caught with his pants down fletcher is already holding practices for his senior boys basketball team in order to prevent a recurrence of last years slow start it seems the boys were so into their all- ontario volleyball chase that they werent ready to dribble when the basketball season com menced the very next day sport notes dably dejected after the loss as was their coach sandy bush power hitter jason cowan the only player on the team who can smash the ball to the floor like a junior or even a senior at times wanted to shoulder the blame n i alone for missing a few shots at bruce stapley the end they never recovered and the season was a washout and the old pro jim rehill will go into yet another season with an untried badminton team simply because he cant procure time in the school gym but then hes only got himself to blame for turning sdss into a volleyball mecca some 20 or so years ago speaking of which its been a while since theyve seen anything quite like the last ditch rally that came within an ace of seeing the midget volleyball crew advance to the durhamyork final last wednesday the sdss faithful were screaming with anxious delight as the young spartans came back from a steep deficit took the lead then ran out of miracles just as they stood on the verge of tak ing their semifinal with st- marys of pickering the local boys were understan- but without his earlier efforts the spartans wouldnt have been there at all this kid has got a ter rific high school volleyball future fletch has already got his hands oh him as cowan regular ly works out with the senior spartans the 15 year old is sure to follow in the footsteps of big brother guy who had a dazzling career at sdss before graduating last spring all in all its a great year to be a spartan
