beekeeper stung by planning board the tribune wednesday september 13 1989 p3 tracy kibble y staff reporter 1 whitchiirchstouffvilles planning committee used their stingers to squelch a mccowan rd bee farmers request to upgrade a 2400squarefoot building to accommodate a honey house whitchurchstouffville mayor fran sainsbury said henry nauta wants to change the rules of the game after he agreed five years ago to demolish the old dwelling when his new home construction was completed the mccowan rd bee farmer wants a building permit to upgrade a 2400squarefoot dwelling in order to house two bee helpers and to accommodate a honey house needed to process package and store honey products prior to shipment five years ago when construction on a new residence began nauta agreed to tear down the old house upon completion of the new home but today the new home is still unfinished and still unoccupied the committee is asking why conroy dowson the farmers planning consultant and spokesman at a planning meeting last week said council should not find trouble where there is none and because were all our brothers keeper nauta should be granted his request to keep both buildings up the bee farmer operating 15 beeyards consisting of 209 colonies in four surrounding municipalities nearly four million bees wants to upgrade the smaller dwelling to a suitable standard but the zoning bylaw states this structure would have to be at the rear of the proper ty and lie 50 metres from the main residential building a sketch shows the smaller building is located in front of the vacant newer home and lies at least 185 metres in front stouffvilles bylaw enforcement aims to prevent a property owner like nauta from repeatedly severing his land and constructing multi ple buildings around the main dwelling town planner michael saunders states in his report to council the town would be setting itself up for a future severance request by nauta especially if the land use changed or if the property was sold a letter from the ministry of agriculture and food supports nautas apparent need for a bee house but members of council said no to nauta on the grounds that he has not kept his part of the bargain in tearing the building down upon completion of his new home and that he has not justified his bee business to the food and agriculture department dowson said his client a man of integrity doesnt have to tear down the old building because the new one isnt completed yet he called the whole thing a breach of faith but ward 2 councillor ron robb questioned why after five years the new house is not occupied or complete i suspect he just ran out of money dowson said supporting staff recommendation the planning committee denied nautas request to upgrade the older building on his property shes crafty photomike hagarty there was plenty to see and do at the 125th uxbridge fall fair this weekend especially for exhibitors like kathy elchesen she and dozens of others marketed their wares at the crafts show here she weaves one of her intricate basket creations for development pro richmond hill wants town approval the town of richmond hill is requesting whitchurchstouffville approval for an industrial development proposal to be located on the west side of hwy 404 north of the stouffville rd the staff recommendation to the planning com mittee is to go along with the proposal only if rich mond hill agrees to screen any outside storage areas visible from the hwy 404 offramps i dont want to have to look into a junk trap every time i cut off the 404 said mayor fran sainsbury whitchurchstouffville will comment on the development to the ministry of municipal affairs and housing but the town would like to approve the proposal to show joint cooperation on both sides of the municipal boundaries the proposal will be formally heard at an up coming public meeting and the council will vote on the issue at the next council meeting stores allowed in building next to rec centre tracy kibble staff reporter more than 10 local residents showed up at last tuesdays plan ning meeting to object to a pro posed retail outlet that would be built next to stouffvilles recrea tion centre the owner of the property cur rently running a slaughterhouse sold the 3acre 118hectare lot to fable enterprises for the development of a retail outlet originally the lot was to be zoned general commercial allow ing offices clinics financial in stitutions and studios but coun cil- requested the zoning be downgraded to local commercial banning such businesses from the project several residents objected only to restaurants and apartment dwellings being included in the plans but others objected to the commercial development altogether id much sooner see houses go on that property expressed one resident but mayor sainsbury said who wants their home backing onto the complex grounds we are trying to ac commodate the recreation com plex and to utilize sewage capacity one- fifth more students at local christian school from page 1 eased load in registration at the high school is because parents are opting for the chris tian education system but robinson says the 22 high school students attending the christian school make up the smallest portion of the student population we havent had a significant increase in high school students this year i dont think we are af fecting the high school very much robinson says he says the student population has increased steadily over the past three years but it seems difficult to predict if the numbers will continue to rise parents are realizing now that there is an alternative and now that weve been around for a while they are more aware of our existence robinson adds stouffville christian school in dependently owned and with no ties to either school board adds religion classes to its education roster which plays a significant part in the daily classroom lessons parents are choosing a school that recognizes christian values and one that teaches their children lessons that support religious teachings at home robinson explains the stouffville school in ex istence here since 1982 belongs to a protestant association along with several other metro and sur rounding area schools the two buildings and six por table classrooms can house ap proximately 250 students the fable retail outlet pro posal which would change the zoning from abattoir to local commercial had residents con cerned about what type of businesses would land in their neighborhood a local commercial zoning bylaw normally permits the use of upper level apartments and restaurants but council will only agree to the project if a special deletion is inserted into the agreement to disallow the two both the residents and members of council were not in favor of upper level apartment units or restaurants mainly because of questionable sewage capacity and an already bloated restaurant market the developer had already agreed to exclude the two at the last public hearing meeting in order to make clear what type of retail units would be per mitted agent rob johnston of alcorn associates asked the planning committee to consider certain amendments so the pro ject could proceed without fur ther delay this agreement has been whittled down we are prepared to remove restaurants and all dwelling units from the agree ment and to support local residents wishes however we strongly urge council to consider adding six other uses and to sup port the application with these additional uses said johnston in his presentation to the committee the six additional uses fables agent wants added to the local commercial zoning are as follows day care facilities a florist an optical store a phar macy a fitness store and a spor ting goods store council support is needed to support the viability of the pro ject johnston added town planner michael saunders said an amendment would be needed for all retail uses except for day care and fitness facilities and mayor fran sainsbury agreed with the additional retail use amendments because these facilites are ones every resident really requires on a daytoday basis the mayor added a new phar macy would be ideal because the residents need an emergency drug store that would be open on sundays if designed properly this pro ject could be made to work with everyones interests sainsbury said but ward 6 councillor james sanders said the new retail outlet would detract from the main st area people have tried to establish business in the downtown area he told members of council but mayor sainsbury said the main st merchants had the op portunity to oppose this project at the last public hearing but didnt come council agreed to proceed with the amendment to add six addi tional uses to the retail outlet deleting apartments and restaurants and to maintain the zoning local commercial earn extra money 1 become a carrier today available routes 1 fainriewave 2 rupert ave attention flyer advertisers
