sandras no stranger to busy life in a small town kate gilderdale correspondent although shes been in stouff ville since 1976 sandra stronach still regards herself as something of a newcomer only when her house is refer red to locally as the stronachs house rather than by the name of the previous owners will she be convinced that shes truly arriv ed she points out with a grin the stronachs came to stouff ville via toronto and halifax when we were returning from there we found we couldnt af ford toronto so we chose stouff ville and were delighted we did never one to sit and do nothing sandra didnt let the grass grow under her feet when she got here i became involved immediately in the community she says i was on the centennial committee in 1976 and joined music mania right away and ive been in it ever since she also collected for various charities such as the heart and stroke foundation and spent as much time as she could spare on her passion to create crafts which eventually led her to open freckles on main st my husband kicked me out of the house he told me if i wanted to make things i was going to have to find a bigger space for them she says it turned out to be an excellent suggestion and in 1985 she found herself owning her own retail craft store i was a bit nervous at first particularly having the- store here she notes there was nothing like it on the street at the time my lawyer tried to per suade me to open in markham but i said i was going to make it work in stouffville and ive never looked back as well as displaying the work of many ontario artisans sandra still makes a lot of her own pieces especially wreaths as a member of the business community on stouffvilles main st she quickly became involved in the business improvement area bia association which she has chaired for the past three years from the start she stresses i wanted to get in and do something i always wanted to help out and make my own little contribution when she joined the associa tion the study on the recent downtown improvement had just been done from then on we had to fight and fight to get our funds in place the results were worth the ef fort she agrees our four ben ches from the progress club have come in and theyll be out on the streets soon she was also delighted with the success of this years strawberry festival and the increased in volvement on the bia it worked out really well it was very much a community event she notes she would now like to see more work done on the christmas festival of bells we want to make it much better because the people are coming photo kate gilderdale sandra stronachs 13 years in stouffville have been productive ones since moving here via toronto and halifax she has opened a main st crafts store and become involved in community events she currently chairs stouffville main streets merchant association and says she is adamantly prostouffville she wants the downtown to remain a place where people can walk down and say hello to everyone on the street out to it the bia is currently fighting against the proposed move of the town offices from civic dr to hwy 48 and its an issue sandra is very concerned about we dont want them to move she insists i think it will be a big mistake no ones going to come into stouffville business- wise theyll be going up hwy 48 to the new offices i realize its some way in the future she adds but im con cerned about what happens in the meantime because theyll lose interest in the downtown thats what will result if the centre of town moves out there shed prefer to see the town ex tend the use of older residential buildings to house some of the councils different departments it would be nice if they could get more of those houses like the planning and works depart ment she notes then she adds they could create a courtyard area which could also serve as a focal point for residents they could close off civic and make it a meeting place for peo ple in town theyve spent enough money on the clock tower and brought in the new building the future could still be downtown she insists and she believes the decen tralization of the town offices would eventually change the nature of what is still a small and friendly community id like to see us keep it as a place where people can walk down and say hello to everyone on the street she says ive liv ed in a small town most of my life and thats why i want to keep the centre in the downtown area she feels so strongly about the issue that shes asking concerned residents to come to her store and sign a petition to keep the municipal offices in town when shes not busy at the store or working with the bia sandra spends her time looking after her elegant main st home or try to get in a little golf which i love and which ive played for a long time sandra and her husband dave have three children leslie 22 jason 20 and craig 18 after 13 years intown she says shes become really pro- stouffville im beginning to get like the old residents im getting upset about all the farmland be ing taken and while personally in favor of the towns inclusion on the big pipe she doesnt want to see indiscriminate development so far its grown nicely if we were on the pipe i think it would bring in industry which would lower our tax base but it has to be the right kind of industry she says stouffville tot wins a spot on calendar matt
