action on the abortion issue shows a severe breach of respon sibility and respect for canadian rights local prolife and pro- choice activists said last week ultimately the law must come down through the federal govern ment and that is why there is such a mixup across the coun try at this time jerry young an active member of the prolife group the campaign life coali tion said in an interview last week up to this point theyve been avoiding the issue and that will have to change mr young 56 and his wife marie 51 have been actively in volved in the prolife movement for the past five years in january and march of last year the couple spent a number of hours outside henry morgen- talers abortion clinic in toronto to help stop abortions from being performed mr young said many politi cians are trying to make everyone happy and most are concerned with how a decision could affect their political career its a very touchy thing for a politician due to the split in the issue he said but the federal government must get off the back benches and pass a law because the pro vinces need leadership on the issue mr young said robin rowe national spokesperson for prochoice group the canadian abortion rights action league which officials say has about 25 members in stouffville agreed that the federal government has shirked its responsibilities on the abortion issue ms rowe speaking on behalf of local members said new abor tion legislation is imperative at this stage to help stop the in junction phenomenon that has surfaced in the recent barbara dodd and chantal daigle cases in ontario and quebec only the federal government has responsibility for abortion and it has to be made clear that a province cannot interfere with that decision ms rowe said uxbridge resident karen at- tridge another active prochoice supporter agreed that new legislation must be passed soon ms attridge said a law must be passed to ensure a women has the right to choose for her self building officials go mobile with phones demand soft pharmacies stock new painkiller matt nicholls correspondent stouffville residents suffering from severe headaches and mus cle pain may have a new way to rid themselves of their discom fort in the future a new line of nonprescription painkillers are now available across canada and a number of local pharmacies have stocked their shelves with the new products the new painkillers sold under the names advil ac- tiprofen mediprin and motrin ib all contain ibuprofen an in gredient previously unavailable in canada as a nonprescription drug but under new legislation pass ed by the federal government this spring ibuprofen has been redefined as a nonprescription drug making it available to con sumers in overthecounter sales these drugs could revolu- tionalize the painkiller market helen carty a spokesperson for mcneil consumer products said in an interview last week we think they can grab a 20 per cent share of the market within the next few years ms carty said pharmacists believe the new painkillers will reduce the side affects many peo ple get after taking asa used in products like aspirin and acetaminophen used in products like tylenol some people experience nausea and other forms of discomfort with these drugs storm lashes stouffville a severe summer storm packing heavy rains and strong winds ripped through stouffville saturday uprooting several trees and knocking out power in some areas the storm hit which hit in the late afternoon dumped several millimetres of rain on the area in a short period of time heavy winds knocked a tree onto a house on victoria st and power was knocked out on elm st shortly after the storm stouffville fire chief bill brown said the fire depart ment received a number of calls after the storm but none were serious there were trees down all over the place mr brown said and we had a few power outages in the area no injuries were reported it seems the trees fell just like pulling weeds out of your lawn i guess when the ground gets wet they just come right out mr brown said the storm was probably the worst one stouffville has seen this summer we had another big one on friday but this one may have been a little stronger he said it had really high winds and very heavy rain the rain was driving so hard at times it was impossible to drivel- but mr brown said the high winds were not generated by a tornado we have nothing to say that happened he said bob macaloney a foreman with the town works depart ment said the damage caused by the storm was minimal mr macaloney said two in surance companies are cur rently assessing the damage caused by the fallen tree on the victoria st house but he ex pects the damage report to be small ms carty said these new- painkillers virtually wipe out these side effects and a 500 mg dose of a painkiller containing ibuprofen is more effective than a similar dose of a drug containing asa or acetaminophen ms carty said ibuprofen is not a new drug it was developed in the early 1960s and was first introduced in canada as a prescription drug in 1973 it has been a non prescription drug in the us since 1984 ms carty said it has been a strong performer in the us market since 1984 and she thinks the same trend could show up in canada but many local pharmacists arent sure of the drugs potential just yet weve had some people re questing it so far but they have to ask the pharmacist for it said aikens pharmacy manager rob croxall so far i havent had a lot of people come in and ask yet but i think the demand will pick up it has had a lot of advertising in the states and its only been on the shelf here a week widdifield drugs ltd phar macist nicholene wilson said not many people know about the drug and sales so far are not as great as they thought they would be but ms wilson said she thinks the drug will do well in the future canadians tend to follow the american market she said i think they will do well in the future getting in touch with members of the towns building and bylaw enforcement committee will be- much easier in the future thanks to a new state of the art car- phone communications system the new communications system was installed approx imately two months ago after be ing approved by whitchurch- stouffville town council the system consists of three transportable car telephones and one fixed telephone unit the new telephones made by diamond tel enable building and bylaw enforcement commit tee employees to keep in touch with each other and members of the public when theyre away from the office i find them very helpful because so many people are try ing to see me every day bylaw enforcement officer keith saunders said in an interview if i have a question on a site that needs to be answered i can just get in touch with someone al the office right away mr saunders said the three keith saunders going mobile transportable units are handy because they can be carried from site to site sometimes youre in the mid dle of a farmers field and you need to call in he said and you cant go looking for a pay phone the telephones also have a builtin answering service that records messages if the phone isnt answered immediately there havent been any pro blems with them yet mr saunders said and so far were very happy with them angry resident battles flooding matt nicholls correspondent a stouffville seeking compensation from the town after their yard and basement were flooded in the storm the norwoods live beside a new development and they believe the towns engineering consultant failed to plan a suitable drainage system in the area to accommodate a large rainfall i feel a little let down by giffels the towns engineering consul tant 40yearold gord norwood said in an interview last week they havent done what they were hired to do and they havent pro tected my interests its up to giffels to suggest this wont work and they shouldnt be finding out now that it the existing drainage system is not going to work mr norwood has been building his house beside the new develop ment for four years and said he was never contacted about the drainagesituation he said two new culverts were recently installed across from his home to help deal with the drainage problem but a ditch to hold the water was not built the town has brought in a back hoe and helped clean up and they have been kind in their assistance mr norwood said but i just want to know why it happened in the first place ward 3 councillor nick tatone said he will help the norwoods gain compensation for their loss i really think
