community at the time recalls don there was little entertainment for young people on a saturday night and they felt something should be done to address the problem we set up rallies and showed christian films and travelogues every saturday night throughout the year he explains the rallies continued for about 20 years until television became the major source of entertainment wed have sports first and at nine oclock we came in for the rally he says several churches later started sunday night rallies after the local service he notes the meetings were led by local pastor norman rowan all i did was get the films and arrange the talent for the saturday night rallies insists don what made them grow is that we had four years of musical festivals where between 65 and 70 con testants would take part don and his brother howard contributed prize money of about 1200 for the festivals for the first six months they brought in talent from toronto and various parts of the world says don but it didnt work we started with a church full in december but ended up with about a dozen by june with declining numbers they decided to concentrate their ef forts on local talent and that paid off he says out of the musical festivals came the radio broad cast choirs the organization also featured a boys band four years after yfc was formed youthtime radio which is still broadcast on seven ontario stations and other channels around the world was started to encourage participation in the early yfc rallies the organizers used to arrange various sports activities in cluding hockey and baseball as many as 30 volleyball teams would play in the park remembers don that got the come and help us celebrate entire summer stock off sale begins june 26th thanks markham for your patronage 144 main st n
