memorial tour nament in willowdale this weekend and they did it by edging out a team burkholder feels will be one of the two teams his team must beat to capture the ontario crown at hagersville on the canada day weekend boyds blanked st catherines 10 in sundays final riding the one hit seven strikeout hurling of byron baranieski and the agressive base running of chris burkholder buttermakers come close in kingston the stouffville mites buttermakers softball team were near perfect last week in both league play and saturdays tournament competition in kingston but a ball thrown into centre field in the last inning of the cham pionship game cost them the kingston title as they bowed to napanee 32 the loss was the only blemish on a week that saw them outscore their opponents 9119 the butters bested unionville 125 monday behind the nine strikeout pitch of billy wray 4 home on wednesday they whomped thornhill 305 andrew harper matt turner and jeff hassard stroked home runs with assard and robbie spytz racking up three hits each j bobby lewis fanned eight thornhill hitters in the kingston tournament the butters opened up by beating belleville 62 with spytzs two run homer the big blow they whipped the host team 202 then breezed past bramalea 212 to advance to the final but despite the strong pitching of kevin hackert the mites couldnt find their bats in the deciding contest against napanee burkholder who was named tournament mvp scampered home from first base on a blooper by jamie showers with two out in the fourth inning for the games only run baranieski was virutally unhit- table throughout the competition allowing one unearned run in four games his efforts earned him the top pitcher designation for the tournament stouffville took saturdays opener 30 as baranieski racked up an incredible 20 strikeouts with five coming in one inning as two third strikes were just too hot for catcher jamie showers to hold on to boyds then walked over millbrook 100 before earning a berth in the final with 21 victory over pickering rich burkholders three hits were pivotal in the contest with brother chris providing the game winning run batted in coach burkholder was more than satisfied with his team after the 10 title win over st kitts st kitts is one of the 2 teams we have to beat in the ontario championship we played nicely together as a team he felt baranieski had hit his stride during the tourney hes basically pitching pretty awesome now it seems the more work he gets the better he is mvp chris burkholder was equally excited after it was all over it was incredible i think we summer hachey winner of the schools senior female athlete of the ear award for the second straight year will be a part of the provincial squad that will go to vancouver july 7 to compete for the canadian championship the 18yearold grade 12 stu dent was one of four sdss students to try for the team the others were jeannie st john sue carter and jennifer pretzker hachey was the only one to crack the lineup a half back hachey anchored photo bruce stapley for the third year in a row brenda hachey of stouffville will be a member of the ontario field hockey team this summer the soss student was recently picked for the team shortly after she won the schools female athlete of the year award the sdss girls field hockey team last fall she has been a fixture on the school team since she was in grade nine she credits her coach cathy croucher for helping her make the provincial team two years ago croucher got us interested in trying out she had been a member of the national field hockey team at one point after making the team hachey accompanied it to van couver where they lost out to british columbia in the finals last year as a member of the provincial under 17 squad she went with the club to waterloo were they were alsorans this year she is playing on the provincial under one unit her training has consisted of skating over the winter and playing soc cer for the school team she played in the york region senior girls all star game in aurora two weeks ago conditioning she maintains is the key to cutting it at the provin cial level they work on stickwork drills sprints and long distance running at the tryouts conditioning is stressed if you cant finish the sprints you dont make the team on saturdays i play with crouchers club team in toronto she has taught me a lot its good having someone who is so superior to me she can show me a lot hachey is hopeful shell make the provincial under 21 team next season but claims she has no desire to follow it through any further it will be a big jump next year and i dont think i would try for the national team i dont want to become that intense it would take too much time and i wouldnt be able to go to university hachey an honors student the past three years hopes to take environmental studies or urban development at a university in ontario which has a good field hockey program i could pro bably get a scholarship at a small college in the united states but i dont want to go to school there she is planning to take a year off from her studies in 1992 so as to enable her to work in barcelona spain for the summer olympics i know some people on the toronto olympic commit tee who might be able to get me to barcelona to help but of more concern to her right now is the upcoming high school field hockey season next year croucher is going to newmarket to teach so well have a new coach im not sure who chris burkholder lome ford mvp betz pools make clean sweep it was a clean sweep for stouffville betz pools this weekend at a fastball tourna ment in oshawa doug macmillans sacrifice fly scored dale moxley with the winning run in the fourth inning to give betz a 21 win over league rival united indepen dent operators of richmond hill in the title match gary vaughan had homered to lead off the big fourth a cou ple of fielding errors by betz in the last inning gave ulo their run the only blemish on what had been a string of three shut outs leading up to the cham pionship game betz opened up the tourney friday night with a 40 whitewash of oshawa acl us ing timely singles and well ex ecuted bunts to score their runs john annis threw the shutout striking out nine batters betz then blanked north bay 40 with doug webster firing a four hitter for the win a bunt single by chris jones proved the big blow with two runs coming in to score on the play the win combined with a default victory over bradford put the pools platoon in the semifinals against league rival greenbank powered by jones two run homer the stouffville squad prevailed 30 with annis rack ing up his second tournament shutout daryll moxley pitched the championship game giving betz their first tournament win of the season the big win comes as a morale booster for the local fastballers as spirits had been low as of late because of a str ing of losses and a lack of at tendance by some team members coach dave webster felt hav ing most of his troops out to the oshawa tournament was a big plus we finally got everybody out john annis was just incredi ble in the semifinal against greenbank all our pitchers were and the key was our
