ing friday as the stouffville district secondary school spar tans lost a 1a heartbreaker to huron heights in the york region high school softball championships in newmarket scott evans who pitched the spartans to their first ever regional title last spring gave up only one hit in the six inning contest but it was enough to sink the sdss squad a third inning triple resulted in the games only run as the huron heights runner came home on an infield out later in the inning the spartans managed four hits all singles including safeties by rich burkholder and evans in the first but they couldnt cash them in the nail biting top of the sixth smythe reached base on an error then advanced to third on infield outs huron heights elected to inten tionally walk chris burkholder even though the slugger took a swing at one of the high pitches in a hope of getting another pitch he might have been able to hit chris winn then grounded out to end the game sdss coach doug mccammon lamented his teams inability to bring its base runners in to score at games end we had some runners but we just couldnt score them he said evans echoed his coachs sen timents its a tough way to lose we just couldnt get guy cowan in what had to be one of the closest competitions the school had ever known anne beecher and brenda hachey were declared co- winners of the senior girls top athlete honors while the junior male and female winners were les hartai and reaquel beecher respectively the prestigious homestead trophy went to lise haylow while lisa weatherill was scott evans off to world juniors presented with the donna tub man memorial award for school spirit the award named after an ex- physical education head at don head secondary school in rich mond hill was presented by the husband of the teacher who died of liver failure in 1988 the moral and physical im provement award went to tam my yake and dan bell lise haylow and chris burkholder were given the athletic council plaques and kevin stem and lise haylow were acknowledged as boys and girls fitness champs the john turner memorial was presented to scott mckinley megan morrison took the coaches trophy les hartai won both the boys track and boys field awards while anne beecher took the girls version of same with sister rea- quel sharing the field nomination other winners were as follows boys cross country bruce hachey girls cross country week citing time restraints and a desire to play higher level softball as th reasons j im playing with the rich mond hill merchants mens team this summer and ill bp going down for a five game tryout
