gourley who has worked l jas a special education teacher at the school for the past 15 years orf continue to help out on a 3fll volunteer basis my husband ijliasnt retired yet so i dont have 0 the freedom to get up and go 01 says tol born in trout creek ont dal 9a up in schumacher she at tended teachers college in north i kf before teaching a year at 7f loring in 1954 n the gourleys then moved south richmond hill where dal taught at henderson ave public school for seven years before coming to summitview ive been here 23 years but its never been boring says mrs gourley it has been rewarding and ive enjoyed it as a special education teacher mrs gourley was responsible for teaching language arts and mathematics- to students ex periencing learning difficulties many would do their tests in all subjects with her orally as they often have trouble expressing themselves in writing some kids just cant cope with written tests she says her students go on either to the high school in stouffville or don head secondary school in rich mond hill where they can take basic level subjects mrs gourley has been pleased to see a shift in the overall em phasis in education on learning by rote theres a place for drill but not the whole program better to have the new programs where the kids learn manipulative skills especially in math she notes she is also encouraged by reading programs that allow for the different levels of develop ment in children and she doesnt feel the tenden cy among students towards poor spelling is all bad in creative writing to mark the spelling too stringently would inhibit creativity she says as for todays students mrs gourley feels they are for the most part a sound bunch there are some who dont respect authority in general but the kids are more selfreliant and sophisticated today she observes the village of stouffville has experienced a great deal of change from when she first arriv ed on the scene she says its a different community now there are more ethnic groups which is good for the town but i wouldnt want to see stouffville grow too much bigger while both of mrs gourleys children attended summitview they were never taught by their mother and she says when her husband finally retires the couple might just move back north we would like to eventually have a log house she says but i dont know if thats a dream that will ever come true dal gourley who has taught at summitview public school for 23 years plans to retire this spring the 19year stouffville resident will take advantage of phoiobruce stapley the york region
