mediocre 198889 season i think they were third last this year said anderson but they are a good team and with a promoter like blair we should be able to get them on track anderson told the tribune he stouff ville for their first home game the next evening versus markham by bruce stapley when cliff bass was asked to look after the officiating of intra mural sports at summitview public school in 1959 he didnt have any idea he was embarking on a lifelong career as a sports arbiter today the aitona resident spends most summer nights um piring for the yorkdurham mens slopitch league and the towns minor ball program he has worked his way up from umpiring local girls rep ball teams at the age of 13 he was picked up by the north york um piring association in newmarket a year later and started to work senior softball games at 16 he was umpire and chief for the north pickering softball league in 1978 he gave hockey refereeing a shot along the way but gave it up when he found it to be too much when combined with his summer sideline of umpiring baseball games the head of outdoor education at westview centennial secon dary school in north york bass finds officiating a good way to pass the time in the summer months most of the time its a lot of fun he claims you get to meet people i dont do it for the money although it does mean a few dollars on the side his memories are made up of both the good and the bad he vividly recalls a night game that ptiotobruce stapley cliff bass an umpire for more than 30 years is gearing up for the 1989 season back in 1959 the aitona resident took up officiating and has j been at it ever since he calls umpiring fun but has gone through some rough times behind the plate as well i orchard park makes clean sweep it was a clean sweep for orchard park public school at the area f north junior coed volleyball tournament last monday the host squad took all four of their games to end up with 12 points earning them the right to compete in the area f finals this week may 8 to 12 dickson hill public school was second with two wins and three losses good for nine points while summitview public school placed third with a win and four losses for seven points orchard park team members include aimee gaston michelle gilroy leah kiminerly sylvia jankulovski cathy evans anne marie roy cory goertzen doug frew mark rennie brian saunders dwayne lapp donald mcclean and shawn sargent the team was coached by staff members steve rensink and pain henry went 17 innings at a tournament in mt albert in 1979 the final score was 10 it was a long night he was also a part of the crew that umpired the allontario championships won by the stouff ville bantams in 1987 but he remembers with the same clarity a game in pickering when after ejecting a player from the game he was chased off the field by an angry fan with a baseball bat the fan was rather in ebriated john annis who plays for stouffvilles betz pools team now was pitching that night and he grabbed the fan and broke his jaw while bass used to umpire mostly fastball he now sticks mainly with slopitch games say ing he prefers the faster pace theres more action and less balls and strikes he likes the atmosphere of slo- pitch saying it is less fiercely competitive than fastball there is a sense of cameraderie among the players there is a friendliness in tournaments andc the umpire doesnt have as domilfi nant a role m occasionally the good timeris spirit runs a little high and s bass admits he once decided the i ball players were more in- j terested in drinking than playing ball it only happened once during j a weekend tournament i had to walk off the field both teams- were inebriated i bass maintains most ball players are usually willing to 1 give him the benefit of the doubt- j on a close call as much as the ump is only 50 per cent right mostj of the time the players really seem to appreciate the job you do for them if the worst comes to j the worst he knows he could be j spending the rest of the game out of the game bass who has two young sons one in tball feels hell be call- i ing them out and safe for many s years yet ill continue on its a good outlet for me in the summer time photobruce stapley no strain no gain stouffville district secondary school has the fittest students at least the results of the annual fitness challenge would lead to one to believe that
