champion ship freshly tucked under his belt byron baroneski is a sure bet to bolster the whitchurch stouffville midget rep team this season the 18yearold resident of the vivian sideroad will join scott evans to make up one of the most dynamic pitching combinations in ontario midget coach howard burkholder feels the addition of the flame- throwing baroneski will make his team a legitimate contender for both the provincial championships and the canadian midget softball title baroneski who threw for bradford last year seems happy to be here my teammates at bradford were all moving up to junior this year so i decided to play for stouffville because i think weve got a chance to go to the allcanadian finals the righthander has been pitching since he was seven years old and is no stranger to provincial championships he pitched the east gwillimbury team to the allcanadian finals in 1981 and 1984 and helped them capture the ontario title in 1982 with bradford he was a provincial finalist in 1987 then helped his team win it all last season baroneski uses the windmill stule of pitching and describes his mo tion as relaxed but there is nothing relaxing to the opposing hitters about his assortment of fastballs rise balls slow drops and knuckle change- ups while baroneski was always the pitching ace for teams he played for in the past he will share the spotlight with evans this season and he says he looks forward to it i think it will be great i was the teams only pitcher the past few years and that can be rough in tournaments it will be good to know theres someone else to share the load this year ive known scott a while now we throw much the same style and speed baroneski remembers several classic hurling duels with evans four years ago we played stouffville for the league finals the game went 14 innings with scott pitching for stouffville and myself for east gwillimbury we finally won it 10 baroneski will pitch against many of the same hitters he baffled last year as the towns midget team will compete at the junior level this year and mostof the midget players he faced last year will have made the move up and as if his opponents dont have enough to worry about with his pitching baroneski admits hes fairly handy with the bat as well im not a bad hitter i dont have the power scott evans has but im a contact hitter add it all up and it spells sure trouble for the opponents of the towns midget softball team in 1989 outlook excellent great season expected for soccer photolbrucestaplev the stouffville midget rep ball team will be an item to contend with this season with the addition of byron baroneski above the stouffville pitching staff will be the units strongest asset baroneski says he is not a bad hitter either ballantrae club mammfornew tennis members by bruce stapley under the watchful eye of former english soccer bright- light bob tilley the whitchurch stouffville soccer club will take to the pitch once again may 29 and if registrations to date are any indication it promises to be the leagues best season in a long time the outlook is excellent says club president tilley a former goalkeeper with the brighton boys of the english uftderl6league we budgeted for 150 players and that is exactly what we have got weve had a phenomenal response tilley says there were 100 ap plicants out for the first registra tion of the year which is unheard of all the undereightyearolds and the underlos are back this year plus some new players thats got to say something about the things we did right last year while the players may be the same as last uyear the executive is sporting a new look past- president and longtime soccer booster casey van maris has moved on to become an executive member of the ontario soccer association martin johannessen whose stouffville royals allstar team disbanded after last season is now sitting on the york region soccer association board tilley the clubs vicepresident last season will have arden sargent as his vplee and sue kea are the registrars sandy morreau is secretary darlene harrison treasurer and van maris and johannessen are ex ecutive members at large the club will operate strictly as a house league this season and will interlock with uxbridge and port perry there are six under- eightyearold teams four underlos two under12s and one under14 the undereights will play minisoccer once again using half the field and playing seven a side with smaller goals weve done this for several years now says tilley its worked well with 60 players in the under10 category tilley notes the club can start working on the forma tion of a highly competitive all- star team for the 1990 season were in a rebuilding season we have a strong nucleus of younger players which wutbuilrj itself into a great pool for a rep ream which we will pick in the fal and work with all winter in doors they will then play in the region of york soccer league next year tilley is hopeful the team will stick together for years and become a consistent quality team as was the case with johannessens royals tilley says the club has all its coaches in place for this year but that there is still room for a few more players at every level and as always sportsmanship will be paramount we stress discipline says tilley if a kid swears on the field hes disciplin ed chippiness is just not ac cepted you win by merit not by brute strength tilley is hopeful the club can arrange a few tournaments for its players as the season progresses hesaid the club has developed a healthy level ofparental sup port and that the players have always appreciated having their parents involved the kids love to be patted on the back by their parents after a game we feel parental involve ment is critical to aplayers development all games will be played on the three soccer pitches adjoining the recreation centre girls honored at annual hockey banquet stouffville resident angela white receives 200 for the 200
