ross barnhardt canadian chairman of nonprofit conserva- tion group ducks unlimited hopes an art auction will result in some steps towards that goal ducks unlimited has approx- imately 100000 supporters in canada and probably five times that number in the united states it operates in canada the us and mexico the organization raises money through private and corporate donations the annual fundrais- ing dinner and art auction takes places wednesday may 3 at le pare hwy 7 and leslie st in markham we auction off a lot of wildlife art and some original works at the dinner explains mr bar- nhardt we have a great number of carvings and sculptures of decoys by very well known carvers among the artists represented this year will be len ugarenko from newmarket whos won rib bons for his carvings in the world championships the north american waterfowl competi tion in michigan and at the sportsmans show larry fell of markham wayne simkin of richmond hill al glassford of scarborough organization raised 47000 bet ween 75 and 80 per cent of the money raised is used directly for protection of existing wetlands habitats or the creation of new ones our wetlands have been disappearing may not wish hunters to be permitted on that land but thats his prerogative although ducks unlimited was originally founded by hunters it doesnt take any position on the question of hunting he
