clubs annual elimination draw and dance being held at the uxbridge arena april 28 the lucky winners in the elimination draw will be sent on a trip to sunny hawaii here last years winners from left sarah 16 tim 14 and shelagh mulveney discuss their trip with lions club member gordon gauslin by jim thomas when 16yearold scott ferris knights place bloomington heard a trip was being planned to the space academy in hunt- sville alabama he was among the first in line nine students attending stouff- ville district secondary school will leave in october and be away 10 days scott is one of them hes certain the onsite instruc tion will better prepare him for a career in engineering scott fits perfectly into the tribunes criteria of young man on the move so engrossed in the sciences is scott he sat through two sessions when a speaker on aeronautics attended career day at sdss april 5 he also enjoys drafting born in the victoria parkyork mills area scott moved with his parents jim and lynn ferris to bloomington 12 years ago he has an older sister and brother laurie and kevin scotts activities at stouffville high include work on the year book committee and athletic council he hopes to maintain the honors standing earned in grade 9 scott ferris is off to a us space academy with nine sdss students come fall a responsible and well- liked student at the school scott is the tribunes young man on the move scott retains good memories of his years at orchard park 1 still drop in once in awhile he says he remembers the school secretary mrs cardwell and mr mcconachie his teacher in grade 8 he really prepared us he says of mr mcconachie due to advanced instruction the adjust ment to grade 9 came more easi ly he states scott also appreciates the help of his parents they encourage me to do my best he says scotts not afraid of work sav ing every cent for the space academy trip this fall hes employed parttime at farmer jacks a responsibility he en joys he hopes to continue there this summer he thinks nothing of ridirg the threemile distance on his moun tain bike a holiday he remembers was a family vacation to victoria bc two years ago he still applies some of the things he learned a handsome cleancut young man scott is one of the bestliked students at sdss classmates all sneak highly of him to have friends you have to be friendly he replies two close companions are john 20yearold says he doesnt remember a thing about the accident i remember going to a movie in newmarket with my girlfriend i took her home and dropped her off he recalled he was on his way home at about midnight when the colli sion occured for the next threeandahalf weeks he lay in a coma at sun- nybrook hospital it was another 10 days before he became fully conscious when he first came round i thought i was just dreaming i saw my mom there and my dad and quite a few other people his girlfriend kristi was at the hospital constantly he says at first the prognosis was poor hed broken almost every bone in his body and the doctors were concerned he wouldnt pull through recalls his mother i had problems with my memory and still do a bit an thony explains adding he has suffered hardly any pain and feels optimistic about the future i feel a bit better every day when i woke up i couldnt raise my arm so i started on that he was in a wheelchair for about threeandahalf weeks before graduating to crutches now he gets around with the aid of a walking stick the doctors couldnt believe it they thought id still be in a wheelchair he said when he turned 20 on nov 12 about 21 friends and relatives came to visit him in hospital he was moved to riverdale hospital to begin his rehabilita tion program on dec 9 i started therapy there they did a wonderful job he says warmly he was allowed home weekends from christmas on and was released permanently on march 23 he attends therapy sessions in oshawa twice a week which will con tinue until about the middle of june although hes not sure if he 11 suffer from the longterm ef fects of the crash hes already talking about getting back to work as a bricklayer hc gels out most weekends and spends as much time as he can with kristi who lives in toronto his attitude to what happened is philosophical why should i be unhappy i was in an accident and i cant do anything about that everybodys being nice to me and im always nice he grins cheerfully the support of his family and friends has been a tremendous help im just faking it a day at a time and im happy to be get ting better hc concludes with a smile j
