henderson of bowood avenue toronto describes his age he symbolizes the saying youre only as old as you feel and mr henderson feels young a native of cherrywood altona road and cone 2 pickering he was born dec 6 1888 on a 100acre farm one of six sons in the family of john and jane henderson he attended cherrywood public school in 1908 his parents sold the property and moved to bethesda ross went to live in toronto and took a job with the toronto railway in 1912 he rose to a position of assis tant superintendent of the metropolitan railroad working out of an office at what was then the city limits the line extend ed from toronto to sutton with a branch from toronto to schomberg in 1924 1 saw snow that would break your heart ross recalls the banks were as high as the hydro wires snow plowing equipment was minimal back then he remembers on one occasion the train left on a saturday and didnt return until the following tuesday five years prior to his retire ment he worked for gray coach bus lines on bay street mr henderson and his wife the former teresa baker were married 67 years mrs hender son passed away at age 92 ross vividly recalls the first motor car in stouffville it was owned by dr freel i remember how dad would get out of the buggy and hold the horses head when ever a car came by he had to or wed have ended up in the ditch it was the sight of them and the noise he said although ross lives alone and prepares his own meals two daughters reside close by he has a greatgranddaughter age seventeen hes been associated with bed ford park united church formerly presbyterian more than 60 years he was honored by the congregation last may on the occasion of the churchs 64th an niversary and made an honorary life chairperson of the churchs council a citation delivered on that oc casion reads in part in his youth his marriage his family his community his work and his church ross henderson has established an astonishing record of service of giving of helping and of caring he aided the poor the homeless the sick and the dispirited it was a calling for him to seek out those less for tunate than himself and offer what he could to help how for- tunatc wc are that this gentleman so alert so indepen dent so active and so caring should have been spared to con tinue to inspire us by his example mr henderson was responsible for initialing a retired mens club at bedford park at one point the membership was- as high as 53 with an average atten dance of 45 when the weathers right he takes a stroll over to the eglinton centre where he talks to people many of them strangers when the manager of the eaton store there heard of his 100th bir thday he was invited to the board room where a group of friends and a birthday cake were waiting the gesture was much appreciated ross still remembers his doc tors advice dont sit back in an easy chair stay active it will add years to your life some folks think theyre old at 75 he claims he still walksi to
