ing in the town of uxbridge because im here he stated i enjoy local politics and i enjoy being involved candida te for mayor in pickering a veteran tribune november 9 1988 c17 by bruce stapley wayne arthurs contesting the town of pickering mayoralty with george ashe says his six years on council representing ward 3 have prepared him for the top municipal office arthurs father of four has taught school in thornhill for 14 years he believes his record of community involvement points to his being the right candidate for the job and while he wont come out and say it he hints that it would be better to have a mayor dealing with queens park without ties past or present to any of the ma jor parties arthurs opponent served as a cabinet minister for the conser vative government in ontario for four years i think we have to have a leader on council who is credible at the provincial level who has no ties with any one party he says arthurs is an environmentalist whose concern with the garbage crisis in southern ontario led to his becoming chairman of the board of directors for durham recycling a group responsible for the placing of 65000 blue boxes around the region and like other candidates in the pickering municipal race he is dead opposed to any more dump sites in the town ive been opposed to any ex pansion or addition to the brock west dump site he says im opposed to any landfill sites in or impacting on pickering weve done more than our share to han dle the garbage of the region and toronto my role on the durham recycling committee is a way of wayne arthurs mayoral candidate saying that i want to do something about the situation arthurs believes the traffic problem in pickering has become the focal point of all the problems and pressures facing the town all the frustration of growth lack of facilities etc are focus ing on traffic people are all say ing they left the big city for some green space but now its taking them twice as long to get home from work as it used to arthurs points to two areas that must be addressed in order to alleviate the growing traffic problems first the money available to widen the altona rd from hwy 2 to sheppard should be directed to connecting steeles ave to taun ton rd which would give us another eastwest connection he says the second solution involves the shortening of the time frame of seven to 10 years for the pro posed widening of hwy 401 to brock road he sees growth as an in evitability for pickering but in- why we are voting for fred cox ron m0ran fred cox knows why many of us moved to country settings he agrees with us and supports us in trying to preserve the quality of rural lite sandy and al satey cachet thesal to end all sates c- retiring from business jgfeggg everything on sale savings from 10 to 50 daily deep discount specials open thursday and friday evenings sists the outofcontrol aspect of development must be addressed i want to see quality develop ment and i want to be sure we have the infrastructure built to properly sustain future growth things like roads services and the fire protection services he says and it is essential that council be able to serve as an effective watchdog forcing developers to fulfill all their obligations to the town he adds arthurs would also like to see a mayors task force set up to study the affordable housing situation in pickering he would work towards mak ing council more accountable i would address the whole issue of leadership the lack of response to public issues we have seen in the past the arrogance shown by council ive been known to be a little adversarial on council but it has been in an attempt to make council more responsible arthurs has been on the library board for seven years and spent another six on the museum advisory board he was president of the glengrove com munity association and organiz ed a condominium association in pickering he served as public service chairman for the united way in the area in 1987 he claims that if elected to the mayors position he would step down from his teaching post frariisah excellent organizer reelect sainsbury mayor nov 14 announcing executive offices in historic unionville
