championship new efforts to get stouffville on track by bruce stapley nick tatonc the ibm manager and horse hobbyist known to some as the mayor of he vandorf sideroad used to run the odd long distance marathon to keep his body in sync with his everracing mind the race he is running these days however involves the chasing of votes as he attempts to succeed jim rae as the ward 3 councillor and one of the areas he finds himself addressing more and more is that cf activities for youth in ward 3 and the town of whitchurchstouffville as a whole being a realist he accepts the fact that funding just isnt there for a pool at the present lime and he tries to get the kids to understand that cor porate interests cant justify a new movie theatre a mcdonalds restaurant or any of the other facilities that teens like to frequent track possible however mention the words running track to nick and his eyes twinkle his hands begin to gesticulate and the ideas begin to flow yes of course we need one he claims our high school athletes arc at a distinct disad vantage as it now stands and stouffville district secondary school will never be able to host a track meet without the facility and what about all those adult recreational runners who must risk shin splints and craz ed motorists as they run the streets of stouffville a proper running track would be just the thing to rekindle their interest in fitness but of course- jhc truth is it just wont happen not if its left up to the school board and town and for understandable sport notes bruce stapley reasons with cutbacks and restric tions that are being placed on school spending well be lucky to see a few new basketball hoops added to sdsss list of new facilities in the near future and when mayoral hopeful wilf morley listed the towns priorities in an interview the other day a track wasnt even mentioned its hard to sec how such a toy could possibly compete with hard needs like a pool sewage and water facilities a new town office and the expansion of our library the recreation office sug gests interest in a track was not foremost in their survey asking residents what playthings they want to see added to the current roster beauty of it so the answer to the running track question is to embark on one of the greatest cooperative programs stouffvillc has ever seen through a combination of fundraising grant chasing and good oldfashioned sweat we can have our track and the beauty of it is only those who arc interested need get involved there will be none of this aw i dont want it because ill never use it stuff when nick and i threw the idea around last week we were both jumping around with ex citement within minutes just the thought of harness ing all that youthful energy of those high school athletes along with the willingness of adults and area business to gel involved had us waxing optimistic all we need now is a gungho organizer a superorganized person with a knack for captur ing peoples imaginations local landscaping trucking and construction outfits would probably be more than happy to come on board as they have so many times in the past work to be done wed need bobcat operators to take up the sod loaders to put it into trucks and laborers to prepare the ground i supposed wc could find an area dealer in building materials to get us a good price on sand crushed brick or whatever it takes to build an adequate track come on stouffvillc its time to take on a project that will show the rest of the world just what were made of once again a running track is just another sign of a towns coming of age and weve arrived in almost every other category lets put our minds to the est our hands to the shovel and go for it with a few more nick tatoncs on our team we just cant miss
