for the congregation of green- and adherents both past and wood united church present morning and evening ser- the occasion was the vices plus activities denominations 125th greenwood united church minister sharon patterson cuts the anniversary cake below ted brooks played guitar at the celebration on sunday anniversary rev wb thornloe of vic toria park united church delivered the message at the morning worship the service at night was a program of vocal and instrumental music with the congregations pastor rev sharon patterson in charge a drama and slide presenta tion were enjoyed at the greenwood public library during the afternoon much of the work in putting the days events together was undertaken by betty pegg the church organist and choir leader a history pf the congrega tion and the church was pro vided by doug morden a member of the anniversary committee the greenwood congrega tion was established in 1863 services were first held in the orange hall the original church was built in 1876 the present sactuary was erected in 1928 the charge has been served by 31 ministers with rev tom fleetham remaining 18 years a lovely painting of the original church completed by greenwoods nancy hoar was admired by many engraved plaques honoring the anniversary were received from ontario premier david peterson presented by norah stoner and from mayor johnirahdersoji jtoavn ot pickering- the gifts were recognized 6y mr morden sunday evening choir members past and present included betty pegg betty goodwin marjory morden pat beach pat pegg barbara pegg elva henning sheila brooks kathy post jean thomas alfred pegg russel patterson joe pegg and fred brown participants in the christian family celebration on sunday night were thetait family rosalie obrien ted brooks russel patterson nelson cole margaret and vic osmond lois stuart and syd milnes linda maher jim carswell ron and susan mcmullen the congregational singing was accompanied by russel patterson and rosalie obrien a 125th anniversary cake was cut by rev patterson and served following the evening worship nancy hoar above a member of greenwood united church shows her painting of the original church built the heart of rural pickering should be the location for a service in memory of one whose roots were deeply embedded in township soil despite the fact william g newman held positions of pro minence at both municipal and provincial levels of government he never lost touch with those to whom he meant so much and who meant so much to him bill newman died oct 12 in ajaxpickering hospital follow ing an illness of almost two years he was 60 born at dunbarton the son of harry a and margaret newman bill received his degree from the ontario agricultural college in guelph intensely interested in politics bill newman advanced through the ranks of pickering twp council to become one of he youngest reeves of his day in ontario premier william davis recognized bills energy and en thusiasm appointing him to two of his governments most impor tant posts minister of the en vironment and minister of agriculture he carried out these duties with determination and vision foodland ontario was one of his most ambitious projects he resigned from cabinet in 1979 and from the legislature in 1981 rev sharon patterson pastor to the congregation of ml zion church touched on all these things at a memorial service saturday the sanctuary was filled to overflowing with many seated in the balcony and the basement some stood outside mourners included former township reeve sherman scott f bill newman former mpp a doer former councillors milton mowbray and sid pugh mpps bill ballingcr and norah stoner ross stevenson michael starr and more rev patterson spoke of mr newmans special place in his heart for this congregation she told of his close association with the ajaxpickering hospital and st pauls church-on-the- hill dunbarton he was a doer she said he made the best of people they could possibly be rev patterson spoke of the close family ties mr newman en joyed and appreciated he found illness hard to ac cept she said he wanted more time not for his own glory but for his family the pastor quoted the com ment told to her by a close friend who described bill as the straightest man i ever knew i knew him as a good neighbor a loving father and grandfather she said rev patterson was assisted in the service by rev harry newman a brother of the deceas ed and rev brian mcvitty of su pauls anglican churchs dunbarton j a saxophone solo was rendered by russel patterson thij ministers husband bill mceachnic of the mceachnie funeral homej pickering was in charge inter ment was sunday at salem cemetery besides his wife the former molly mitchell mr newman i survived by two daughters cathy and carrie one son allanc grandchildren amy david anct christopher three brothers rev harry newman green wood rev robert newman beaverton tom newman alstf of greenwood and one sister anne in ireland he
