been forwarded to ms ontario to assist with research clinics clients in other areas of ontario where there are no chapters and with education of professionals were excited to be able to an nounce that were heading into a federal election whoopdedo the excitement has all the impact of a swat in the face with a wet sponge while neither the party leaders nor the riding candidates elevate ones emotions to fever pitch at this point in time brian mulroneys in the drivers seat unless in the seven weeks ahead he falls flat on his chin the pm should emerge victorious with the ndp se cond and the liberals third locally bill attewell of the pcs should win handily with jag bhaduria of the liberals second susan krone of the ndp third and john gamble in dependent fourth while most ws voters are still con fused as to what riding theyre in let alone who the candidates are this will all come out in the wash of preelection propaganda soon to rain down upon us personally we hope john turner takes a pasting at the polls only by burying their leader will the federal liberals rise to fight again right now thanks to an inept mr turner the partys wallowing in a sea of despair we can only trust nov 21 will end the suffering maybe then david peterson can be persuaded to take over the reins and once again make the federal liberals a political force worthy of support wotta day first was markham fair later i had weddings at central united church unionville christ anglican church stouffville and the united church in claremont last but certainly not least was a golden wedding anniversary at the maples of ballantrae tucked in between was the 30year reunion of the stouffville cardinals baseball team such was my saturday with one exception i made it to all sincere apologies to newlyweds ron and janet yakeley my pontiac tends to shudder at anything over 120 kms so does the driver neither of us is as young as we used to be although the cars in a lot better shape still we both have our limits while each event in its own way was a no 1 attraction the cardinal reunion was a classic it was held at the home of murray and tiny stewart lincolnville would you believe every player to a man was there even lynn taylor from as far distant as british columbia so was ted suzuki stouffville eric barber uxbridge murray holden peterborough john little peter borough ross madill stouffville bob stover stouffville harry barber elora don haynes toron to lawrence wideman belleville and gord eckardt stouffville ike hodgson long a part of the stouf fville sports scene was the coach mur ray stewart was manager it seemed fitting that this team that nickled and dimed its way through to the ontario championship in 1958 should hold a team meeting in the stewart family garage and consume barbecued humburgers on an openair grill- nothing fancy just oldfashioned fellowship with the exception of age thirty years older not that much has chang ed still the goodnatured group of guys i remember back then but on the field they were deadly serious led by catcher don haynes the kind of team leader every championship club re quires these fellows played to win and win they did beating wheatley 53 in a rubber match on neutral grounds at port dover yes i was there and i returned again saturday nothing short of an earth quake could have kept me away certainly stouffville had good ball teams before and even since but the cardinals were special i felt as much a part of the club as did the manager and coach they treated me that way too even asked me to do a little umpiring now and again but only when the regular ump failed to show up however for the most part i operated the pa system back of the plate for one season maybe two i was the jerry howarth of stouffville memorial park no i didnt just call the balls and strikes i called the playbyplay an ob vious nono in ontario baseball associa tion circles one outfielder believe became fair had everything it was a markham fair that had everything including three days of nice weather and the people responded by the thousands while the word record when associated with fair attendance is sometimes used with wrecklcss abandon it should certainly apply thursday through saturday that is if visual estimates were ac curate saturday afternoon the site was a sea of humanity the evening too sundays dropoff due to the rain had to be expected by then however success was assured to the hundreds of volunteers who put in so many freegratis hours the response must be ex tremely gratifying it makes it all worthwhile while the fair is indeed a markham based project were pleased more and more whitchurchstouffville residents are now actively involved school children too this helps maintain an agricultural balance so necessary in a rapidly changing markham community from hagersville i so incensed at my goingforextrabasis routine he charged onto the infield in protest i think hed have come through the backstop screen if the umpire hadnt in tervened the oba official told me in no uncertain terms to cease and desist a blossoming career in broadcasting quickly went down the drain i returned primarily to keeping score but even that occupation had its risks one sunday afternoon at durham north of mount forest i was doing just that when a loudmouth homer sit ting directly behind me uttered a crude comment about the local team all heads turned in my direction and i bore the brunt of a verbal assault the like of which id never heard all pleas of in nocence were to no avail i was lucky to escape the park in one piece the cardinals of 58 had no super stars it wasnt the kind of club where eight guys could lay back and rely on the heroics of one they played as a unit a cohesive unit at that but several outstanding performers come to mind harry barber was a pit cher without equal his prowess on the hill attracted the attention of several bigleague scouts catcher don haynes literally defied threebase belters to steal home he could also peg a ball to second with deadly accuracy ted suzuki was the teams speed mer chant with ted a routine single was an automatic double he also covered the outfield like a blanket when it came to the long ball gord eckardt uncorked many a tape- measure blast that was yesterday i was privileged to be a part saturday was today i was privileged to attend see you in thirty years the guys called out as i left for another assignment thirty years hmmm thatll make me seven months short of ninety itll be game over unless the great umpire in the sky agrees to extra innings clydesdale showman for fifty years is honored gord lewis rr i uxbridge was honored at markham fair friday it was his 50th year as a showman in the clydesdale heavy horse class he started at age ten leading a marc and colt from the home farm on mc- cowan road markham to the old fairgrounds hwys 7 and 48 mr lewis was accompanied in the show ring fri day by granddaughter shannon hughes age two-and-a- half jim thomas editors mail progress dear editor i was sorry to read that deer park inn has cancelled plans for a theatre on the site while there are many advan tages to residing in this
