tribune october 5 1988 c9 volleyball team is off to flying start by bruce stapley the stouffville district secon dary school spartans senior volleyball team rolled over the competition in two league mat ches last week but their inability to finish off their opponents cost them in a weekend tournament the sdss squad the defending york region champions beat huron heights in two straight games 157 and 153 and wiped out king city 152 and 154 as they hosted their first season matches on monday the spartans then took on lester b pearson collegiate in scarborough on wednesday sweeping a best of five set 15h5 1512 and 1511 colin mclean was outstanding from his middle hitter position while karsten hennze and wally barber were setting well in all contests power hitters don clearwater and guy cowan were on top of their game as well but the stouffville outfit had to settle for alsoran status in the 13th annual york university yeoman volleyball classic on the weekend despite having their op ponents on the ropes on several occasions split games leading off against last years all ontario finalists from centre hastings ss the spartans split the first two games and were ahead 123 in the rubber match but they couldnt close up and ended up bowing 1513 they came back to down mary ward ss of toronto 158 and 154 but against york mills they lost a tough threegame match up despite the fact that they took the first game and were leading in the second and third contests the spartans then lost two straight to eastwood another topranked squad before bowing to chatham in the quarter finals for the consolation award the chatham team won the all ontario a division title in 1987 and spartans coach jim fletcher was pleased with his clubs effort against them we were winning 1411 but we finally lost 1715 he said but we played well against them fletcher who knew his team was in deep at the york tourna ment was thankful for the ex perience and believed that with a little luck his boys could have made it interesting learning experience i was a little disappointed in that with a few breaks we could have got a few more games in but if we keep a positive attitude we can continue to improve said fletcher the tournament was a good learning experience for us i think we have a legitimate shot at the all ontario championship particularly impressive for stouffville in tourney action were clearwater barber scott evans steve head and john hall don was hustling all over the floor and he made some unbelievable digs said flet cher scott is really starting to crank the ball from his middle hitter spot wally was hitting con sistently from the weak side steve was strong at the net and john hit well late in the tournament lois bartley rolls a 707 triple lois bartley led the thursday
