they believe that by telling the truth other parents may be sav ed the devastation they now feel son derek 23 died thursday the result of an alcohol and drug overdose he fell from his apart ment in toronto derek his mother said was do ing well at his chosen profession he was employed with his father at the toronto stock exchange and would have tried his exams to serve as a professional trader this spring he had worked his way up mr and mrs duggan were aware their son had a drinking problem also that he was ex perimenting with drugs they tried their best to help but to no avail no ones exempt mrs dug gan said no one is safe we found out the hard way that drugs do kill while nothing can ease the pain they feel mr and mrs duggan are hopeful other young people may learn something through their experience if each person tells another the word will spread she said its left us numb derek as a boy attended or chard park school when the family resided on the bethesda sideroad in whitchurch- stouffville later he graduated from grade 13 at stouffville high winning the legion award he enrolled at the university of western ontario in london on a scholarship but university wasnt what he wanted mrs duggan said his desire was to work with his dad at the toronto stock exchange despite the fact derek had an apartment in toronto he spent much of the past summer at home he enjoyed golf and fishing at high school he played soccer and rugger he also loved hockey a natural athlete mrs duggan said when metro police called their home neither parent was told what had happened mr duggan was requested to come to toron to not knowing he was to identify his son its left us all devastated mrs duggan said she praised the prayer support of wonderful friends and neighbors through their kindness and gods help well see this tragedy through but our world will be emp tier she said mr and mrs duggan have two daughters darlenc mrs pat johnston living near london and denise attending ontario bi ble college rev douglas mcleod a former pastor at lemonville united church and now a minister in the london area con ducted the funeral service sun day from the markham mis sionary church pallbearers were john ohlman brian cargill bryan asa mike an drews mike strickland and bob bastion in lieu of flowers memorial donations were suggested for the addiction research foundation the claremont leg branch celebrates 40th anniversary bv jim thomas claremont saturday evening was a memorable occa sion for claremont branch 483 of the royal canadian legion their 40th anniversary it was march 9 1948 that the claremont legion branch was established the first meeting was held march 15 the initial membership numbered 21 seven of which re main jack lehman gord ben son ren loyst doug reynolds moses norton roy mcleod and harold hopkins four attended the celebration saturday they were presented with engraved woodgrain clocks president cec mcmordie of the legion and valerie budd of the legion ladies auxiliary were in charge of the program they cut the 40th anniversary cake mr mcmordie recalled the history of branch 483 he describ ed how meetings were first held in private homes and the com munity hall later may 5 1949 a oneacre property was purchased from roy brignall for 400 a structure described as a large chicken coop was erected a basement followed with the upstairs completed in 19g6 the mortgage was burned in 1968 an addition was added to the north side two years later the charter president was art sutherland 1st vicepresident sid dunning secretary harold hopkins and treasurer joe farr the membership also included glen manderson james nor ton wm hicks ren loyst wm voss john lehman doug reynolds james briscoe fred morley leslie lye roy mcleod gord taylor jo graham moses norton bud norton and howard hockley the membership rate was s4 cec mcmordie president of claremont branch 483 of the royal canadian legion and valerie budd president of the legion ladies auxiliary cut a special cake saturday evening marking the organizations 40th anniversary plus payment of a one dollar in stallation fee piper george rennie brother of legion member jack rennie played several spirited golden oldies some from the days of world war ii he later led a male contingent around the room the successful evening was ar ranged by valerie budd and frank hendy head table guests were bill and eileen ball cec and jean mcmordie valerie budd don mcbeth padre louise barrib david and susan grainger j four charter members were honored left to right jack lehman gord benson doug reynolds and ken loyst charter members ab sent included moses norton harold hopkins roy mcleod and jim thomas a church milestone greenwood the con gregation of greenwood united church will celebrate a milestone oct 16 their 125th anniversary the church was established back in 1863 the present sanc tuary vas built 60 years ago special services will be held at 11 am and 730 pm during the afternoon betty pegg will host a slide presenta tion beginning at 3 pm in the former greenwood school now a public library a light supper will be served at 530 pm in the church rev wb thornloe of victoria park united church will bring the message in the morning the choir to include former members will provide special music the contact person is pegg 6495023 served in the mrs edgerton lunch will be church hall at night a christian family celebration is planned the wor ship will include both instrumen tal and vocal selections as well as congregational singing the evening will conclude
