captured the all ontario junior a softball cham pionship in oshawa sunday battling the elements stiff competition and the fatigue brought on by playing four games in one day they did it the hard way the club came up against sar nia in the finals of the twoday competition the only team that managed to beat them all weekend and because of sar- nias perfect record up to that point vandorf had to beat them twice to take the crown they proved equal to the task handling the lambton region club 61 in the first game then hanging on to take the second game 64 the vandorf squad who had qualified for the eightteam tour nament by beating barrie and scarborough in provincial playdowns got off to a flying start saturday shutting out peterborough 90 behind the threehit pitching of darren madeley then riding kirk tomlinsons threehitter to a 60 whitewash of st catharines who had won the provincial title for the past three years but they found themselves in a big hole sunday morning when sarnia edged them 43 in extra innings vandorf started their uphill climb with an exciting 32 win over oshawa in which madelsy surrendered only four hits then it was on to the finals madeley came up big once again in game one holding the opposi tion to a run while tomlinson led the vandorf attack with three hits and two runs batted in greg helm chipped in with a home run as well vandorf survived a bases- loaded with one out situation in the first inning of the second game as tomlinson bore down to retire sarnia before they could count a run they scored one of their own in the bottom of the inning when greg fallis who had tripled caught sarnia unaware amd snuck home with the games first run sarnia tied it in the second but vandorf made it 21 when helm drove home tomlinson with a single after sarnia knotted the game at two in the third vandorf took the lead for good on a madeley double that cashed in fallis who had singled mike roberts tworun double in the fourth proved the winner with stouffvilles sean mcquigge providing extra insurance with a solo homer in the sixth sarnia made it close with two runs in the top of the seventh and final frame but madeley was brought in to quell the hell at tend kent state university in ohio and play centre on the schools hockey team ill play hockey and get a degree at minimum cost had i stayed in ontario and attended a university here i would competition tim con tributed to the clubs success they were finalists in the all- metro championships his se cond year with the team it was while playing against st mikes that tim was scouted by a representative from kent state tim travelled to ohio in april where the university made its offer the scholarship will be worth about 10000 over the four years tim says the university is in the pro cess of upgrading its hockey program tim claims they are in division two but are hoping to move up to division one tim whl enroll in the schools business administration pro gram he would like to some day enter the field of business management or accounting he hopes his hockey skills will provide him with a profes sional career cither in north america or europe tim has been training for his kent experience to the point that hes concerned he may reach his peak too soon ive been doing 45 minutes a day on the stationary bike and jogging plus another 45 minutes on weight training he says if you hit your peak loo early though you can sometimes fall off before the season starts he also- played ball hockey this summer in uxbridgc thats great training youre constantly running stick handling and shooting at kent state theres a vigorous three week dryland training program before the players set foot on ice if i work hard it should be good for me he says therell be a lot of discipline involved with twohour prac tices each day along with my classes vandorf manager carl myers felt the events of the first inning were critical to the eventual out come of the game we shut them down in the first inning when they loaded the bases with one out he recalled then when fallis stole home to give us our first run in the bottom of the inning it gave us a break myers said fatigue and playing in rain a berth in the final of the south lake simcoe ladies softball league with a decisive 236 thrashing of mount albert thursday the stingers are undefeated in postseason play the league was divided into two divisions for the playoffs and the winner in each plays for the championship each of the three teams plays the other two teams twice stouffville has been grouped with mount albert and uxbridge last week they beat mount albert 128 and uxbridge 42 and thursdays win ensures at least a tie for first in their division the deciding game is tonight wednesday in uxbridge the stingers were air overmount albert thursday as the score j would indicate the bats were cracking left right and centre tracy parks led the attack with a home run a triple and four runs scored cathy carr added a triple scored five times and batted in five debbie gold doubled singled twice and collected four rbis candy brown scored five runs sheila fockler pitched the entire game and while she didnt strike out many she continually forced mount albert batters to hit playable grounders stouffville blanked in oasa tourney by chris garbutt it was the provincial tourna ment weekend for the ontario amateur softball association and whitchurchstouffville was represented in a total of five divisions while the vandorf juniors ran away with it all sunday the others werent as successful mites the junior buttermakers won one of heir three games in their a tournament in bramalea but were up against tough competition in their first game they dumped orleans 103 but they lost 41 to unionville and 106 to guelph kevin hackert and sonny acosta provided good pitching throughout the tournament for the mites we played probably as well as we could havesaid mites coach dave smart were really a b team in an a tournament and our hilling could have been better but he mites were strong on defence michael brett had a great double play as he hauled down a fly and fired to second to get the runner the miles also caught runners in rundowns twice one between home and third saw catcher evan boyd and shortstop tim smart combine to get the out smart and wally crowder work ed together to lag out another runner between second and third boyd had a great throwing arm as he foiled two steal attempts pee wees the living lighting pee wees were the talk of the oasa b tournament in owen sound even though they lost both their games stouffville lost a heartbreaker 107 to tournament finalist sim coe in extra innings down 31 after the first inning the pec wees rallied for four in the top of the seventh to take a 54 lead capped by a tim lavell tworun double but simcoe came back to tic it sending the game into extra innings the eighth was scoreless and stouffville took a 75 lead in the ninth thanks to a kevin nichols single simcoe scored a run in the bot tom of the inning and it got tense with the bases loaded twoout and two strikes on the simcoe batter but the simcoe hitter cracked a grand slam and finished off stouffville after such a tough loss the team found it hard to bounce back and lost 31 to host owen sound the pitching trio of jody infur- nari tim lavell and derek har rison had a strong weekend and the rotation kept the opposition off balance most of the time bantams the stouffville bantams had a tough weekend in simcoe as they lost 155 to owen sound and 97 to grimsby it was mostly mental errors said team manager gary fraser all the teams were about the same ability it just depended on who was up for the games the first game was close until the fourth inning the bantams even had the lead until the fourth when the score was tied at five but then the roof fell in and owen sound scored ten con- secutive runs to put the game j away against grimsby stouffville allowed six runs in the top of the j first and had to battle back the j whole game bill pride went 4for4 in the se cond game and basil luciano socked a home run we would have one bad inning and that would seem to set the trend fraser said midgets the midgets lost both their games in their tournament in hagcrsville their first game was tied until the sixth when their simcoe op ponents knocked in two runs to take a 31 score jamie showers had a double and scott evans hit a long triple against simcoe the hardthrowing evans couldnt be there for the second game against hagersville the midgets lost that one 63 chris winn singled and tripled
