editor in her speech to the house of commons a speech lauded by the prochoice movement as a passionate defence of a womens right to choosebarbara mcdougal exposes the erroneous foundation of her own groups stand she stated i speak on behalf of those women who have been faced with bearing a child not of their choosing it is the mother who bears the ultimate responsibility and therefore ultimately must have the choice and make no mistake women make the right choice for a cabinet minister to make such an unfounded generalization as the pivotal premise of her argument is baffling it shows clearly the irrational nature of the prochoice position to accept her statement we would have to believe that being a woman guarantees infallibility women simply dont always make the right choices they are as capable of making mistakes as anyone else nor can it be demonstrated that the individual woman or man for that matter is always in the best posilion to decide whats right for her or his situation this is particularly the case in times of extreme stress and emo tional crisis all we need to do is look at the tragic number of suicides the growing problem of prostitution drug addiction alcoholism and other social pro blems to see clearly hal women do not always make the right choice about their own bodies and these situations bad as they are would become much worse if society did not enact legislation to restrict them and protect the innocent sometimes from their own actions or as in the case with wearing seatbelts their inactions for ms mcdougal to say that a i woman faced with the tremen- dous trauma of a crisis pregnan- cy is always going to make the right choice is like saying that aj person confronted with suicidal depression is in the best positioni to know whats right for his or her own interests nor is there any guarantee thai a medical practitioner who will benefit financially from to use mcdougals own words the killing of an unborn child is going to counsel correctly one only has to look at the record of some of the horrific abortion treadmills in the united states to see that some doctors can be as inhumane selfish and immoralf as the worst of us to leave matters of life and death to the distraught in- dividual or to one who can benefit financially is an invita- 1 tion for disaster it is particularly 3 in times of extreme emotional jj crisis that people need the collec- j live wisdom of a society which j recognizes the immeasurable in- i trinsic value of all human life in- eluding both mothers and unborn i children and will offer enj
