began with three rows in the garden he recalls with a smile in 1986 he grew oneandahalf acres and thats when he began selling to the public outside the family property last year i grew eight acres and set up a stand on the stouff ville road this year he planted about 15 acres and two weeks ago he opened for business between kennedy and mccowan north side of the stouffville road until the beginning of october much of scotts time and energy will be directed towards the corn business its a venture that involves the whole family with his father dave mother marg and 13-year- old sister karen helping out a neighbors daughter also does some picking to ensure the corns at its best scott gets up at about six oclock in the morning i could do it the night before but it wouldnt be really fresh he comments picking is a major chore par ticularly as it has to be a last- minute operation its also very timeconsuming you do well to pick 40 to 50 dozen an hour even if you work really hard scott explains early saturday morning he begins by picking about 25 dozen and loads them into a truck the picking then contines throughout the day with periodic trips to replenish the stand selling hours are usually bet ween 1 and g pm weekdays usually later fridays and 9 am until 6 pm saturdays we keep going until the corn runs out scotts father says many of their weekday customers are people who live in town and stop by on the way home on saturday afternoons they serve the outoftowners returning from the golf course or the sales barn scott acknowledges hes begin ning to notice some regulars who appreciate the fact theyre obtaining a really fresh product dave insists theyll not be open sundays we like to spend one day together as a family he insists its something to which weve always been accustomed and we see no reason to change he ad mits though that its not exactly a day of rest work on the farm begins daily at g am and seldom finishes until 930 at night scotts no stranger to farming having lived all his life on the same property hes the fourth generation to live here explains dave my grandfather purchased the place in 1914 and weve been here ever since dave and marg and family are dairy farmers we milk 22 cows and run 50 head notes dave we also put 500 chickens in the first of june and we have some pigs that im fattening scott states not surprising he intends to farm fulltime himself after hes completed grade 12 at stouffville dist secondary school if you dont enjoy farming you dont do it he maintains family vacations are a thing of the past for scott he goes to stayner campround for the long weekend in may dave notes the rest of the family usually manage a break in the summer last year we went to niagara falls and marineland and we often go to the manitoulin island mr paisley explains while dave marg and karen enjoy a change of scenery scott stays behind to operate the farm and take care of the livestock he sometimes takes a weekend or two but not when the corns on smiles his father farming is a job that leaves lit tle time for outside hobbies and interests i play ball for the church team scott says the family are members in the congregation of the missionary church at gormley he also enjoys snowmobiling these days we keep hearing theres nothing for young people to do thats a compalint youll never hear from scott paisley a young man whose hard
