c6 economist suntribune august 3 1988 sensors in jmten yc j m s hugh innis a volunteer a ills cix 6l sghlor is s ylil oinr stron nancy hoskin correspondent for 17 years hugh innes has worked at markhaven a home for the aged five days a week this in itself isnt unusual but hugh innes volunteers his time and doesnt appear to be slowing down even though he is an octogenarian himself besides volunteering his time mr innes has served on mar- khavens board of directors for over 20 years having been on the ground floor establishing this facility for seniors in 1959 mr innes was approached by lois neeley who originally started markhaven in her home located on main street markham there she housed 13 seniors who were no longer able to care for themselves in their own homes in 1960 mrs neeley formed a board of directors and nonprofit corporation which markhaven remains today the group then set out to purchase property to build a home for the aged we saw several lots then can vassed the neighbors to see if they minded a home like this in their neighborhood mrs innis said they all thought it was a lovely idea but not next to them markhaven located on park way avenue in markham is situ ated on land which used to be a corn field surrounded by new subdivisions the local developer sold the board a narrow strip of land measuring nearly two acres for 20000 which accord ing to mr innes was an awful lot of money markhaven one of the first homes of its kind was funded by local churches and by contribu tions and while mr innes wishes the board had had foresight to purchase a larger plot of land markhavens property looks ex tremely large because its front lawn is a lovely expanse of park land owned by the town of mar kham union villa and bethany home werent built when we started younger married couples no longer had the space to care for additional farruly mem bers mr innes worked for manualife insurance for 45 years before re tiring in 1971 his experience as a manager dealing in public rela tions advertising and publica tions help him daily when dealing with the residents at markhaven mr innes has volunteered at markhaven for 17 years working tuesday through saturday 730 am 1 pm monday is a busy day at mar khaven so i take that day off saturday is a rather dead day the staff is cut down and there arent many visitors so i chat with the residents and can do more for them on sunday relatives usual ly come to visit so i take that day off too mr innes explained mr innes is a jack-of-all- trades during the summer months he does most of mar khavens gardening he main tains the grounds keeping them tidy he takes residents to their doc tor and dentist appointments and to the bank if they need to be driven each morning he reads the bible and informs the resi dents on the day s happenings he even helps residents when it com es time to file tax returns we try to celebrate as many occasions as possible we try to make life exciting for the resi dents mr innes said markhaven houses 74 residents miss grace rae who has been at markhaven from the start was first on staff at the facility before becoming a resident mr innes said that the differ ence between a home for the aged and a nursing home is that resi dents must be able to walk into the facility according to mr innes nursing homes often dont offer crafts activities shopping or picnics for their residents most residents in a nursing home are bed ridden or confined to a wheelchair while mr innes believes in established homes for the aged he also advocates seniors living in their own homes for as long as they can cope the government isnt building anymore homes but are building up their meals on wheels prog- ram and the von nurses to look- after health care needs in a seniors own home mr innes said mr innes has enjoyed every minute he has spent at mar-f- khaven if you dont give a little of yourself youll never know the re- jsj wards mr innes said hugh innis is very versatile despite being over 80 himself he still volun teers his time at markhaven home for the aged his duties include looking after the grounds at the markham seniors home shoppers drug mart open 7 days a week store
