as they went on to take a 97 victory at home wednesday and while the first game was a ragged affair the followup was a classic tussle sheila fockler the diminutive shortstop with the great range led the way with her bat and her glove she led off the first inning with a home run then con tributed an infield single in a big fourth inning outburst but the play of the game came in the sixth when with a runner on first the zephyr batter hit a sharp grounder that deflected off pitcher denise daviess glove fockler reacted instantly chang ing her direction racing over to snag the ball she stepped on second and fired a perfect strike to allison lowery at first to complete the double play she also threw out a zephyr hit ter in the fifth inning with a throw that had tony fernandez written all over thursday game time is 830 bob golds team having memorable year bob gold insists its not the rough treatment at the hands of his charges that leads to his alter nating years as coach of the stouffville stingers ladies soft- ball team its simply a matter of time limitations there are only so many hours to go around in any persons life 1 gormley tops stouffville missionary 72 in christian mens church cousins 72 at victoria square friday night in i whitchurchstouffville christian mens fastball league play sayers who alternated innings pitched with boynton swung a hot bat as well he had rbi singles in both the first and fifth innings and his two run homer in the third proved to be the game winning blow the gormley pitching pair combined for 11 strikeouts in the six inning contest yeilding only three hits stouffville jumped out to a 10 lead in the first on a lead off triple by lome michell and a ground out by gerry lewis but after that it was all gormley as sayers and co found steve buck awaits the throw at third bruce stapley scored one in each of the first two innings adding two in the third and another pair in the fifth they closed out their run produc tion with a single in the sixth just before the game was called on ac count of darkness they might have added a few more runs in the fourth frame were it not for a spectacular over the shoulder catch by stouffville second baseman norm wideman wideman ran into cen tre field to haul down a short pop fly off the bat of gormleys corey yake then fired to first base man keith lewis to double off the gormley base runner stouffville mounted one last of fensive thrust in their sixth with darren mccool banging a double and scoring on a keith lewis single keith lewis started in the pit ching position for stouffville but had to hand the ball over to his brother gerry in the second a calf muscle pull sustained several weeks ago was causing him considerable discomfort gerry who had trouble locating the plate at times still managed to strike out five gormley batters the gormley squad upped their record to 732 with the vic tory while stouffvilles record fell to 861 but you cant help get the im pression bob is glad hes at the helm this season long time stingers manager ted lowery is smiling a little more these days as well for the summer of 88 is fast becoming a campaign to remember for the girls of sum mer stouffville chapter after a hohum beginning that is so com mon to teams which end up runn ing away with all the marbles the stingers have proceeded to sting their opponents with near predictable regularity any reservations one may have about womens baseball as an at traction quickly vanish with one look at this outfit not only do they hit pitch and field with authority but they are entertain ing as well the girls are serious yes but not obsessed there is something delightful about allison lowery or a debbie gold hauling down a pop up or nabbing an off target throw or seeing the athletic denise davies throw ten consecutive strikes to dispose of the first three batters of the game at a thursday night home date and you just end up shaking your head in amazement when tiny sheila fockler muscles a fastball into the gap at left centre for a home run then follows it up by turning a textbook double play from her shortstop position the stingers are having one of those seasons where the clutch nil is almost as predictable as the july heat allison lowery capped off a monster week at the plate recently by blasting a two out final inning home run to send the stingers on their way to victory in a tournament at bradford debbie gold cathy carr and alison ashton arc hitting the ball far and often and candy brown pitches or patrols the outfield with style and grace while also contributing with her bat sure they may be a little short of the standard they set when they won the provincial womens- title back in 1985the past weekend saw them lose two out of three in the pw tournament in arnprior but coach gold was pleased with their effort claim ing they were beat by a super team the stingers are however odds on favourites to repeat as south lake simcoe ladies league champs this season if they do they may well be the on- ly championship team produced by stouffville this year so well see you at the town park this thursday night so you can check out this crew
