in the womens under18 category at the canadian judo championships in edmunston new brunswick july 2 the markham resident trains in ballantrae no one expected me to win they were really surprised carline says but i wasnt sur- prised i thought i was going to win it carline didnt lose a match in her bid for the championship she notes that the competition wasnt as tough as she expected the fights werent too hard until the final she says and if canada sends a team to the world championships in the soviet union carline wilf be with them the only problem is that they dont know if they can af ford to send a team she says carline works on her judo technique every week with in structor cathy gordon of ballantrae she also trains twice a week at the university of toronto her judo skills are not unique in her family her brother cabral 18 won several cana dian championships in the past and cabral is the one resposi- ble forcarlines involvement in judo he used to get hassled in school so my parents got him into judo so he could defend himself she explains carline took up the sport when she was six and shes en joyed it from the beginning you get to meet lots of peo ple and the trips you there are 80 proper throws and you have to know them all in english and japanese while judo is her main activi ty she says shes involved in all school sports and hopes to become a swim instructor i also took acting lessons in toronto but i had to give them up because judo took up so much time carline has aspirations of making the olympics but she says usually only one woman from north america
