tribune june 8 1988 c5 a big winner betty aldred centre of mill street uxbridge re cently won one of ten 500 prizes to be donated to her chosen amateur sports association the province- wide contest was held by nabisco in a p grocery stores and ms aldred made her entry at the main st store in stouffville here richard hannah centre left of the uxbridge youth hockey association accepts a cheque from nabisco sales representative alan mcdonald while a p store manager ed graham far left and nabisco district sales manager neil putnam far right look on chris garbutt home support director still has that twinkle in his eye by kate gilderdale claude kerr an active director of home support services has a twinkle in his eye and a boundless enthusiasm for life j born in 1907 he married in 1930 and he and his wife maude have j three children ruth and twins robert and john claude always j had farming in his blood i started reading farm magazines when i was in public school he recalls i thought i knew all ab- j out farming then i bought a farm j and found i didnt know any- j thing the kerrs owned property on j the site of farmer jacks in ring- wood we were dairy farmers he explains they also grew toma- toes for campbells soup they i started farming in 1950 when they moved to stouffville from toron- i to before that claude was a sales- man for 10 years travelling all round the countryside i i was really sucessful at the job because i liked the country the people and the small towns the observes the pull of farming j was strong however and con- vinced him to take the plunge they farmed until 1962 and shortly after they quit they lost stheirbarn in a fire claude hoped gto make a farmer out of his son jfjohn but it wasnt in his blood j claudes involvement with 5 home support services started in 1980 i was in it from day one he recalls the idea originated with helen batts a staff member at parkview home she and claude happened to meet up and they worked together to start with she wasnt with us for long he remembers she and her husband went to win nipeg after a few months while helen was still involved she and claude interviewed betty courage who subsequently joined the program for five years until she had to leave for health reasons jean anderson who is a retired nurse came in on a volunteer basis claudestates when bet ty left we had no problem appoint ing her successor jean took on the position and has been with home support for the last three years betty and jean are the two most dedicated people you would ever find in this program sug gests- claude jim rehill from stouffville district secondary school is also an active partici pant in home support jim started the handinhand program four or five years ago claude says the program in volves grade 12 students who assist seniors during and after school hours through home sup port services it has fostered a great relationship between seniors and high school kids he asserts claude is a director and found ing life member of home support services his main function is to provide transport for seniors i take people for lunch appointments take them to the bank or shopping he explains you build up such a relationship with the people you meet the directors meet once a month at the silver jubilee club we have about eight people but we need more claude declares with the handinhand prog ram supplying more drivers he doesnt do quite as much driving himself but he still gets his share of calls people will call me in an emergency he notes they know they can get me any time of the day he is also responsible for coordinating the program although claude ocassionally feels he would like to give up his role at home support he knows he wont he is a loving and proud family man who became a great grandfather for the first time re cently his philosophy is simple but hearfelt my wife my fami ly my home lifethats what makes life worth living he con cludes in the heat of the summer mcdonalds suggests a refreshing change of pace light n crispy a freshlytossed garden salad with your choice of six distinctive dressings six crispy chicken mcnuggets and a medium size diet coke ifs light its crispy if s the great taste trio good time great taste ed and more r 4877177 v htariosciehce aiid now in markham fle mwifmjrgifrpji donyalmfabg jvjjlhavcnu l jhmsjb itn is 58t
