cs tribune may 4 1988 moving up in vehicles photographer shows work at parkview auditorium local photographer gary grun dy who recently presented a mul timedia slide show with music at parkview auditorium is still somewhat overwhelmed at the enthusiastic response he has been receiving for his work gary a teacher and consultant with the york region board of education for over 30 years has lived in stouffville since 1957 he married his wife ann the follow ing year and has been developing his talent for photography since 1978 when he bought a camera and began to experiment his en joyment of and aptitude for his hobby led him to enter some of his work at the markham fair where he won several prizes including some firsts his success encouraged him to participate in a show of various aspects of art work done by teachers and staff at the york re gion board of education the en thusiastic response gave him greater confidence i began to realize the possibilities he stated gradually it became clear i wanted to take nature shots par ticularly slides explained gary he began to go off on photo graphic safaris staying away for up to a week at a time his wanderings would take him to the family cottage near peterbor ough the bruce peninsula where wild orchids grow the rideau lakes and wherever else he found the right conditions garys first show outside the school system took place at the stouffville horticultural society about five years ago his son paul and daughter andrea both played musical instruments and some one from the society phoned to ask if they would be willing to pro vide some musical entertainment one evening i mentioned my slides and they said they would love to show them he remembers he still tre asures the comment from one member of the society that his show was so marvellous it de serves to be shown at roy thom son hall since then gary has presented his slides through several diffe rent church groups both locally and in toronto and at the silver jubilee club he is also pursuing the possiblity of working with more schools in the area i am interested in showing to different groups and organizations he said it doesnt matter whether they are big or small negotiations are under way with a toronto restaurant which is interested in displaying garys work he is also looking into the possibility of offering a photo graphic service for pet owners who would like to have a special portrait of their companions i thought id call it petography he smiled not all the slides he shows come from far afield some of the most impressive pictures in his port folio were taken locally at areas like bruces milland claremont conservation centre one beauti ful shot of a hibiscus was taken of a plant in his own home he finds inspiration wherever he goes garys show consists of a short introduction followed by a pre sentation of slides on three differ ence screens with specially chosen music to complement the visual aspect in the short inter mission he gives a brief commen tary and at the end he invites questions from the audience he feels a commentary during the presentation is intrusive and unnecessary preferring the pic tures and music to evoke a magic oftheirown i like each person in the audience to go where their im agination takes them he empha sizes sometimes one of his chil dren will play music during the intermission paul plays guitar andrea plays the flute some of garys beautiful prints are hanging at st james pre sbyterian church in town and he is in the process of having others mounted and framed so that he can offer them for sale his next show will be at the stouffville christian school at a date to be announced shortly for anyone who wants to escape the crazy pace of life in the late twentieth century for an hour or two garys show provides the perfect antidote as one person wrote after his parkview pre sentation you lowered my blood pressure by a lot it may have taken gary grundy a number of years to fully appreciate and
