nian has worked at various careers in england the united states and canada l a native of wantage oxford shire england john was origi nally employed with the atomic energy authority it was in the early 1960s he was offered an opportunity to work at the uni versity of texas i what we were actually doing although we didnt realize it then was basic research on the silicon chip he explains when his time full- time writer john decided to ex plore new ground i was good at production but a terrible salesman he com ments fortunately wife jan had a good position but toronto was an expensive place in which to live in 1972 they moved to goodwood because in johns words we couldnt afford anywhere else the house was in real estate parlance rustic the ceiling fellin the first night remembers john no thing worked to add to their problems in this haven of domes tic bliss john was still wrestling with the question of what to do with his life we thought of opening a lodge i was fed up with working for other people he states then the idea of operating a book store came up it seemed one of the few possibilities that required limited initial investment also he could run his own show john approached mcclelland and stewart for advice he was immediately asked if hed ever sold books before or had any retail experience no replied john good responded his advisor this way you wont know that all the things you plan to do cant be done undaunted john rented his first store in stouffville in 1974 the location was 36 main street east though the place was pictures que it would have been perfect for yorkville a substantial rent increase in 1982 and lack of floor space only 700 square feet per suaded him to consider another location as luck would iiave it a store across the street became avail able with twice the space and at half the rent john jumped at the chance since the move business has prospered john lords books has built up a healthy list of loyal reg ulars people who will often buy from me at full price even though its on sale somewhere else for his part john will go out of his way to unearth a hardtofind book and offer competitive prices he has an extensive col lection of secondhand books john receives calls from miles around including buyers and sel lers he also benefits greatly from visitors to the stouffville sales barn often says john theyre amazed to find a booklovers bookstore sofarfrom the city his shop has become something of a meeting place for residents have you ever been to another store where the customers sell books to each other he en quires
