and west embraced in love in stouffville on the face of it it would be hard for anyone to understand why they had become part of our lives much less drawn so close to our hearts that everyone called them mama and papa they were much older than most of us first of all they were from an eastern culture and their ways were much different than ours he was persian she armenian neither spoke english very well at the best of times rut they believed something that made them feel at home in any part ofthe world with anyone it made them at once treat us as a pan of their family and its what made us call them from the beginning mama and papa allzadch dahaiddin and nooni aliadeh came to live in stouffvilie in 1979 having had a house built in vandorf their welcome was especially warm because lapa as a persian became the first native ofthe homeland ofthe dahai faith to live in our town the coming of mania and papa was important because it provided those of us already here with an opportunity to further our experience with people from other cultures and backgrounds it is the purpose ofthe dahai faith to build communities made up of people of many different races cultures nationalities and religions united by their belief in god mama and papas home almost at once became a centre for activities so much so that some of us expressed our concern that we might be over burdening their generous hospitality mama reassured us in her own special way by saying this not our house this him house pointing upwards soon we gladly had to share mama and papa with those who had perhaps more of a right physically if not spiritually to call them mama and papa their two daughters jinus andjaleh married to two brothers ira and parvi victory and their two children venus and rahi moved to stouffvilie in 1981 further enriching our mutual experience then in 1986 mama and papas grandson farad katcrai his wife sylvie and two children borah and yannick arrived it has thus been with amazement that we have watched those initial feelings of closeness and affection with mama and papa far from diminish with the arrival of their real family rather become stronger and deeper this strikes us as a sign of hope not a day goes by that we dont sec news of about the animosity between iran which persia is called today and western countries should we not see this embrace of east and west in love in stouffville as a small but precious victory against the forces of conflict in our world and if it can happen in our small community why not in the world at large on thursday february 25th the family of mama and papa aliadeh received the fateful news that papas life in this world had come to an abrupt end in a traffic accident in markham papa was 8 j and had been married to mama for 59 years though obviously shocked and filled with grief nevertheless we exerted our will to attempt to think from papas point of view and rejoice with him in the life he is now beginning in the worlds of clod the sacred scriptures of the dahai faith gave us comfort as we read with special poignancy have made death a messenger of joy lo thee wherefore dost thou grieve in a very real sense too while his physical form is gone those spiritual qualities which were his reality and our joy remain with us always it is partly for this reason that we write this appreciation resides his hospitality kindness ready service to others and strength of conviction papa had one overriding concern that others come to know about that faith which had so shaped and guided his life papa s biggest regret was bis lack of ability to communicate well in english and to give people be met an adequate impression ofthe beauty he found in the habd i faith in honour of papa alizadeb we who are belter able lo do so
