it makes me angry donna pritlove i think they are a disservice you shouldnt have to walk half a block to get the mail i want the mail brought to my door besides it employs people to deliver the mail to our houses by bruce stapley betty stonehouse admits there was a time she would hesitate to attend a function or make a busi ness appointment if it meant whe would have to drive into toronto on her own born and raised on a country farm in saskatchewan and even tually settling in stouffville there had never been the need to make such outings with any regularity but since taking a dale carne gie course on human relations she has not only overcome her fear of tackling traffic in the big city but she has tapped inner re sources that were just waiting to be uncovered my sister had taken the course 10 years ago she says she said it had enabled her to meet chal lenges head on social skills puter systems the impetus to strike out on her own came after attending a dale carnegie course on human relations bruce stapley jj jane armstrong donna pritlove i felt if i took the course i would be able to enhance my so cial skills so with much trepida tion i headed out down hwy 404 and enrolled she soon found herself among a group of people ranging from low er level employees who were afraid of their own shadow right through senior management types hoping to polish their pre sentation skills some had like betty signed up simply because they felt it would be a positive personal experience others had been sent by their em ployers but what they all discovered was the genuine growth that goes with finding out how to use talents and abilities that lie within give of yourself the whole essence of the dale carnegie program is to stretch yourself outside the limits of your comfort zone she explains its based on positive motivation you become excited about life seeing things in life as challenges rather than stumbling blocks and you come to realize that by giving a little bit of yourself for the benefit of others you feel a lot better about yourself the 14week course involving a 3v4hour session weekly uses books dealing with effective hu man relations and incorporates them into a classroom setting where each participant is given the opportunity to stand up and speak in front of his or her peers no one is allowed to flounder although according to betty it is painful to watch some of the first timers one man who was in the con struction business looked on the surface to be so big and laid back but he turned out to be strung as tight as a fiddle he had to lean against the wall when he gave his first speech amazing transformation but at the end this same man had been transformed not only in his ability to speak in front of the group but in his approach to his goals at the end he stood up con fidently outlining his goal to be a union head it was an amazing transformation she added betty says the determination to set individual goals and deter mination to reach them was one of the more obvious benefits most people have derived from the course it was while taking the course she personally decided to strike out in a business venture for her self i had had the idea for a while but the course made me follow through on it she admitted she teaches travel agents how to use newly acquired computer systems in their offices i go in and help the people who have put the software packages together for travel agencies she says i show the client how to understand them and use them how to access the system to their best advantage computer illiterate the idea came when a compu ter system was installed in her husbands travel office betty was in charge of running it and teaching the staff most people are computer illiterate she says the basic training you get from the com pany selling the computer isnt nearly enough to show just what the computer can do so armed with her newfound confidence and determination from the dale carnegie course she headed down to offices in the toronto area teaching a skill she herself took great pains to master the real benefit of the course she maintains is it not only ex poses you to source material like the book how to win friends and influence people but it makes you actually go out and practice the principles youve learned graduate assistant when youre doing it for over three hours one night a week for 14 weeks it really reinforces those principles she says you are speaking every night giving im- promptu talks dramatic speeches and you are put in prob lem solving situations and shown how to conduct meetings her interest was so keen that she has signed on as a graduate assistant with dale carnegie which allows her to take the course again this time for free im really looking forward to it she says as a graduate assistant you are in a position where you can really grow more so than when you are taking the course for the first time betty insists that while the course has not caused her to make radical alterations to her overall lifestyle it has equipped her to handle challenges much better in most cases people arent going to notice changes in me she admits but inside i feel much more confident ill try any thing
