a4 tribune march 16 1988 editors mail agree dear editor im in 100 percent agreement with your antismoking editorial published in the march 2 tribune this may sound strange coming from a chronic smoker for the last 40 years however i feel people have a right to clean air whether it be in the town office the fire hall or the neighborhood supermarket forcing others to inhale second hand smoke is tantamount to rape it should be punishable by arrest conviction and fine i cant understand why our coun cil should be hesitant to act in this regard sincerely richard huffman manitoba street stouffville s lesson dear editor its not just the residents of westfield estates that need consid er where their votes will go this year but the residents of all of whitchurchstouffville whats happened in westfield should be a lesson to all the mayor and members of council are sup posed to be concerned about the proper development of this town and whats best for the people that make it their home however in this case the dic tates of a developer are far out weighing our present councils con cern for the municipality sincerely b martin stouffville the tribune james thomas editor ofttold tale of civil servants with great potential that potentials seldom achieved not in whitchurchstouffville george schlukbiers not the first to realize this fact and he wont be the last fortunately for him and unfortunately for us he came to this decision now at age 36 personal hopes and dreams can still be realized mr schiukbier made his mark in whitchurchstouffville in doing so he stepped on a few sensitive toes when opposition became too tough to pene trate he withdrew no use beating your head against a brick wall as the saying goes g eorge schiukbier was one of the best idea men this town has ever known while some of his proposals seemed way out toopponents with lead feet the majority he saw through to fruition and whitchurchstouffvilles the better be cause of these yes we crossed swords on several occasions and while he may have lost some arguments and so did we he al ways maintained our respect we hope postal pr appalling many opponents of super mailboxes are making mountains out of mole hills in stouffville where doortodoor de livery may never become a reality boulevard postal stations are a service they should be looked on this way cana da post should be commended rather than criticized while the service itself is fine the pre- service was deplorable homeowners chosen at random to accommodate su per mailboxes even on municipal prop- erty should have been contacted and written approval should have been re ceived under no circumstances should an adjacent property owners objection have been ignored where one might have voiced opposi tion another might have approved canada post should have chosen sites of no resistance it would have saved a lot of headaches with respect to homeowners living apart from but in full view of postal sta tions wc have no patience its as close to doortodoor delivery as youll get count your blessings i he can say the same unknown to most residents since coming to town george schiukbier saved this municipality thousands he knew ways of extracting grants from governments funds that previously hadnt been considered his enthusiasm for programs and projects produced re sponses from several private sources he left no stone unturned hi achieving these goals once in a long while a george schluk- bjer comes to town once in a long while a town can cope whitchurchstouffville couldnt still were the beneficiaries for his being here and theres always the hope some day hell come back maybe by then well have matured to the point of appreciating what someone of his stature can do for a community maybe i enjoy sports baseball hockey golf tennis even wrestling however when it comes to figure skating my apti tude is nil and it probably sounds this way every time i interview one of these talented teens i pose dumb questions that im mediately give myself away regardless i still recognize skill when i see it the heroics of figure skaters give me goose bumps every time i watch the olympics was no exception along with a few million others i sat glued to my set even felt drained when it was over respect for these participants soared to the top of my personal popularity poll i wasnt alone while the calgary competition was un doubtedly the ultimate the markham- stouffvilleuxbridge area has produced more than its fair share of aplus ska ters jennifer cook jonathan street ux- bridge is one i talked with jennifer saturday shes a parttime employee on the staff of national gymn sports at the stouffville sales barn i first saw jennifer on skates when she was nine even then she was a verit able veteran with six years experience theres a girl whos going places i remember saying to myself as i stroked in a star beside her name on the ux- bridge spring carnival program even to a layman like myself i could see something in this little gal that set her a cut above the rest i remember standing and applauding at the conclu sion of her solo hoping against hope shed return for an encore repeat performances have occurred many times since on each occasion the reactions been the same goose bumps and standing ovations last month i attended the invitation- als at uxbridge but something some one was missing jennifer wasnt there j so i enquired of the officials shes above this level an executive member replied obviously noticing a look of disappointment on my face and she was right i had hoped to catch at least one more glimpse of pretty jennif er going through her routine of twists turns and spins but such was not to be not on ice however we did meet at the sales barn saturday she took a 15 minute break to talk and tell me all shed been doing now 16 and in grade 11 at uxbridge high jennifer has completed her gold in free skating and is working on her senior silver dances she hopes to complete her jennifer cook queenies return was doglovers delight seventh figure this spring with one more to go quiet spoken even modest concerning her accomplishments jennifer dismis ses the likelihood of joining the ice fol lies or ice capades sometime in the fu ture she wants something more perma nent following graduation from uss she plans to enroll in university possibly a course in sports psychology its worth it she says of her intense skating schedule it teaches me disci- f pline jennifer was three maybe four when she donned her first pair of skates and gingerly skidded around the old arena with others her age at six someone saw something in jen nifer that prompted her to suggest les sons could prove helpful her parents who jennifer describes as always very supportive agreed her current coach is bob emmerson of the upper canada skating club during this years first semester jen nifer was accorded a leave of absence she was on the ice up to seven hours each day she returned for her second semes ter in february the staff at uss has been very cooperative she says jennifer takes skating seriously but its still fun she explains its also expensive with a pair of skates costing up to 700 there are other expenses as well including instruction competitions and travelling jennifer buys most of her own clothing sorry folks jennifer wont be seen in- the figure skating carnival at uxbridge this spring there isnt one however shes an invited guest in shows at oak- wood and bowmanville both this month of course if youre lucky you can catch her at national gym sports in the stouffville sales barn most saturdays f she wont be wearing skates she may i not have time to talk but sheil surely say hello j thats the jennifer cook uxbridge has come to know to love to respect and appreciate on and off the ice it was back in 1962 that roy heaton of park drive north stouffville and his pet dog quecnie became separated while on a hunting trip near dorset as the weeks went by roy gave up hope of ever seeing qucenic again then one day 20 months later while driving south on hwy 48 near malvern roy spotted a dog in a nearby field resembling his longlost pet sure enough it was quecnie had travelled 120 miles bypassed stouffville then turned around and was heading home the reunion attracted provincewide attention roy and quecnie arc pictured here in a flash read a column by yourself it was headed city cyclists in town you pointed out the fact and it is a fact that city girls arc wary of approaching strangers this may seem out of character in a community like stouffville let me tell you i girl would be crazy to enter into conversation with a stranger in toronto most likely it would be a set up for some thing tragic knowing this young ladies arent about to change just because theyre a halfhour removed from the big city they keep their guard up just in case so please mr editor dont look on toronto girls as polar bears they all mean well but have been raised in an atmosphere far diffe rent from what you know as you quickly discovered the iceberg soon thaws once shes sure her conversationalist has no alter- lor motives mrs gladys pcrin richmond
