perfect pass to the rushing mintz who pulled crawdaddys goalie debbie garbatt out of position and popped it over her only fifteen clicks off the clock when gloria knocked in what would eventually strong defensive play by goalie bonnie hollingworth and defence- man teresa mckenzie kept the crawdaddys squad from getting any closer than two goals the only incident to mar the skillfull and estimates the ball association requires about another 150 players she said it wont affect establishing ball teams as well van koughnet said they are always in need of volun teers for coaching reunion by bruce stapley when the markhamstouffville hockey oldtimers reunion is held at the recreation centre on april 30 one of the people who will be able to take much of the credit for its success will be stouffvilles les clarke les who is on the committee organizing the big event has fond memories of his days with the stouffville clippers of the old in termediate a league the small yet aggressive de fenceman recalls the fierce rival ry that existed between the clip pers and the markham mil lionaires it got to the point where it was becoming difficult for the businessmen he says people from markham who had been doing business with stouffville stores would change stores be cause of the hockey rivalry recently retired after 35 years in the insurance business with birkett and hassard in stouffvil le les came to play hockey with the original clippers in the fall of 1948 it turned out to be more than just hockey he came here for i ended up marrying the daughter of bert bell the teams despite the intense rivalry with the markham millionaires in the 50s former stouffville clipper star les clarke was more than glad to help organize the reunion between the two teams manager he says referring to his wife audrey back in those days i was commuting to the games with austie baker who was the team captain we both lived in the east end of toronto it was while he lived in toronto that les teamed up with bob has sard on a local hardball team hassards athletic abilities eventually led to his playing for the toronto maple leafs les himself had played hockey for a toronto outfit called the q and l flyers before joining the clippers the flyers were coached by exmaple leaf hank goldup he had gone to oshawa to tryout for the millionaires in an early season practice when the stouff ville coach approached him about playing for the clippers he told me it was a new team and there would be plenty of open ings les says he recalls the first clipper squad consisted of several play ers who had jumped from the mil lionaires those included baker his commuting partner bob law- rie goaltcndcr jack harper and coach ernie lawric that is what started the war between stouffville and mar kham les admits so great was the interest in games played between the two archrivals you could hardly fight your way into the arena he claims i remember one game where the arena was so full that some fans went home to get ladders so they could watch from the window he remembers the games were always highspirited while the clippers first played on natural ice in a covered arena situated where the town pool now stands the coming of the new arena in 1949 provided a much better facility for playoff matches there would sometimes be as many as 1800 spectators on hand in the new arena which was demolished this past fall les recalls his career with the clippers spanned the years 1948 through 1957 with a two year stretch with the newmarket senior team thrown in between his years spent in stouffville he eventually moved to town in 1952 where he established a fami ly consisting of two daughters and a son he currently has five grandchildren while small in stature les al ways gave it his best effort and wasnt afraid to mix it up with the big boys i certanly didnt back away from anybody he smiles and the millionaires had some big guys despite the intensity of the ma r- khamstouffvillc rivalry les in sists the game was played pri marily for fun we played to win but if you lost tough luck he says it was strictly recreation it was fun les would become captain of the clippers his last few seasons with them but for him one name will always stand out in my opinion the best all around player that ever played for stouffville was nick bangay les says he was a super guy bangay would go on to play pro hockey with a team in portland oregon as for les clarkes career he admits to having had professional aspirations i went to the training camp of the cleveland barons of the american league in brandon manitoba in 1948 but i didnt make the team he says it was right after that i started with the clippers while nick bangay stands out foremost in his mind he gives honorable mention to the likes of ike hodgson joe lewis polly minton and gord lewis since hanging up the skates in 1957 les has coached and re- ferccd in the towns minor hockey system in the 60s tried his hand at curling and played some golf he still gets the blades out periodically for some pleasure skating but hasnt gotten in volved in oldtimers hockey theres no sense pushing yourself too much when you get to be my age he says sixtyyearold les now does volunteer work for parkview and helps out with the mcals-on- whcels program now that hes retired he plans to spend more time at his cottage in haliburton as for his interest in hockey these days he says he still follows the leafs and edmonton oiler keith acton whose grandfather was once los neighbor and the captain looks forward to a fruitful retirement with wife audrey who will always be his favorite momentoof an illustrious career with the stouffville clip pers port perry lose in overtime to stouffville by blaine kaneko there was a crime monday night at the recreation centre and the neil patrick novice clippers were involved they managed the larcenous act of taking a divisional playoff game from the red and white of port perry 21 on an overtime goal by kyle norton the win gives the hometown boys a 21 lead in their best-of- seven series they may be ahead in the series standings but the game could just as easily slipped to the opposition if it were not for the exceptional play of goalie evan boyd i was a bit worried admitted evan after the game i felt a bit nervous when it was tied i didnt know if they were going to score they had a lot of pressure on us we played average added teammate danny armour we can skate a lot faster and play a lot better it was the fifth game in four nights for the nineyearold net- minder who faced 17 shots in the game three on breakaways with the game on the line the clippers played wideopen positional hockey in the opening frame even outshooting the oppo- siton 43 but port perry goalie mike moran was equal to his counterpart at the other end of the ice and the period ended score less seconds into the middle frame kyle norton accepted a pass on the right boards from andrew hutchison and labelled one along the ice to the shortside with the other assist credited to grahame smith but from that point until kyle nortons overtime goal the play was dictated by port perry steady evan could not have played any better stopping two breakaways in a row and preserv ing the dicey 10 lead with 113 remaining in the second stanza todd parry stuf fed it by the boyd backstop to knot the contest at one goal apiece whether it was the weekend tournament or simple listless- ness the novices couldnt get in gear being outshot in the final two periods of regulation play 122 stouffville went into the game knowing they would be sacrificing a portion of their offence due to coach wally crowders decision to move forward adam crowder to defence testing a four man defensive unit instead of the usual three man system was decided on the weekend at the tournament in lindsay the transition was effective as the defence blocked several shots but the offence suffered its a problem coach crowder hopes to remedy our guys are going to have to shoot more they want to get in too close he offered if we play our top game and they do to we can beat them but we have lapses coach crowder admitted the game was closer than it probably should have been he said at this stage in the series the port perry players want the games more but he assured his team is beginning to realize port perrys intent and hes confident they will get by the scugog rivals mqss downed- fyfy girls aetiok i bunnies flowers continued their improved play following up fast jweeks draw with a z1
