cocoordinator shirley weidermeyer a science fair exposes the child to a wide variety of scientific knowledge it also mentally stimulates the stu dent to explore scientific inves tigation- so many students were bitten by the science bug that almost 200 youngsters decided to take part in the fair constructing everything from tammy amos taste test mike morrisons solar cell megan morrisons force and in ertia to joey sherrens jets planes and roekets the science fervor didnt stop with the students it carried over to parents in the community they were involved in record numbers according to mrs weider meyer parents were given a let ter requesting their participation as judges at the event and they responded in enthusiastic fashion with 23 parents and public offi cials volunteering their time it was the judges responsibility to evaluate each project in the categories of life sciences math and physical sciences and ap plied science and engineering the judges based their comments on the students the opportunity to explore in greater depth the importance of science they learn to coordinate ideas and work in an independent way as a result thoy can learn from each others projects mrs weidermeyer and mrs friedbacher did a fine job in orga nizing the science fair they de serve all the credit mr jeffer- ies concluded rod and tracey are kissin cousins almost tracey hassard 4 and rod assinck3 are more than friends theyre cousins but friends or cousins it doesnt really matter on st valen tines day on feb 14triendships ate for every one cousins included jim thomas division winners are announced hard work hours of thought and a keen interest in the sciences helped the over 200 participants in the ballantrae science fair com plete their ingenius projects while not all the students could be winners hopefully those who did take part in the fair will com pete again next year as for those selected as the top projects at least one of the follow ing students in each division to our 1987 united way campaign in york region there are 30 social service and human care agencies who depend on united way for much of their operational budgets it is only through the help of local businesses their em ployees and local residents that the money can be raised in campaign 87 a total of 1459000 was raised this represents a 12 increase over 1986 a very significant sum we wish to clarinets tenor saxophone trombones bas ses and drums are particularly needed dr legradys musical back ground is extensive it includes a doctorate of music from hun gary as well as many years of teaching in the professional and public education system dr leg rady was also the composer of the cbc production entitled charlie goes to war the whitchurchstouffville concert band not only offers edu cational instruction to its mem bers it also provides musical opportunities to the residents of the town and a service to the com munity as a whole organizations requiring the services of the wscb
