a2 tribune february 10 1988 editors mail pc meeting format raises concerns idear editor j since the last federal election jin 1984 the population growth has created the establishment of 13 jnew electoral ridings s our present riding of york north will become the newly- icreated riding of markham j the new riding will encompass hhe town of markham and the jtown of whitchurchstouffville i the creation of the new riding has led to a number of interesting events which as a concerned con servative has me confused v first take a look at what hap pened in the last election i the pc candidate john gamble jlost to the independent candidate tony roman this was accm- iplished by the creation of a coali- jtion of both tories and liberals supporters who could not support itheir parties candidate still fmany proud pcs supported jworked for and voted for john gamble f dave johnston one of the spokesmen for the atkins action committee served as a riding association executive under john gamble for six years in 1984 he defects and was instrumental in the establishment of the coalition tthat defeated mr camble it was fa successful antigamble battle r now emerges a group of so- fcalled concerned party mem- jbers they say they want to creat ra more responsive and more rep resentative riding association jthey say they want to make the riding more democratic they i say they want to wrestle political jcontrol of the association from f john gamble once again john- jston is involved g this is where i become con tused and concerned at this point i support the ideas rof a responsive democratic and widely representative riding association i support the democratic pro cess j what i do not support is the dis crediting of another person to be nefit ones own personal beliefs ive been told im being idealis- itic for this i make no apologies f the founding meeting feb 11 61988 thursday at markham fcdist high school is to establish a new constitution and elect an ex ecutive executive is defined in webs ters dictionary as one who administers or manages affairs i would then understand that an elected executive to the new rid ing association would be empo wered to administer and manage the affairs of that association and provide a democratic process for those seeking nomination for the next federal election to come for ward but it appears if you want to participate in the federal pc rid ing executive you had better be prepared to declare who you are going to support for nomination this founding meeting is the ridings nomination meeting there is a belief that whoever has the majority support on the ex ecutive board has some advan tage of gaining the nomination or influencing the decision i want to see the qualities of the candidate before i support any body i also hope to participate as an executive board member rep resenting the stouffville area i ask the following questions 1 why did mr johnston par ticipate and be part of the riding association executive for six years if he so disagreed with john gamble 2 how many people have ex perienced the socalled undemo cratic principles of mr john gamble as expressed by the atkins action committee 3 if john gamble does gain the nomination to represent the markham riding association are we going to have an indepen dent candidate supported by tor- ries who are unable to discard personal dislikes sincerely doug
