depression fighting for life ones very existence it had nothing to do with opponents at the other end of the rink i threw my share of body checks recalls the former mar kham blueliner in the old in termediate league thats what i was there for we hit but we didnt fight such was the respect one player had for another the 76yearold burkholder street stouffville re sident says he never saw a fight timers hockey reunion april 29 im looking forward to it he says there are only three of us left daws remembers his hockey years at markham filled with ex citement every year was great he re calls it was always good defen sive hockey we took pride in our defensive skills we really enjoyed the game sure we were out to win but we were also there for the fun daws says in his day the mar kham roster included only three defencemen and six forwards on one occasion a defenceman and the goalie were injured conse quently the team was forced to put a rearguard in the net and play with one man on defence a formidable task considered one of the leaders of the team because of his physical stature the 200 pound 21yearold was paired with max reesor max who later played with the chicago black hawks in the national hockey league used to badger daws concerning his offensive ambitions he was always reminding me it wasnt our job to score goals daws recalls hed say were here to stop them despite maxs jibes and the emphasis on defensive play daws still scored his share of goals averaging about one every two games his most memorable tally came in a league cham pionship game at maple leaf gar dens in 1933 with the contest tied at 22 daws completed a rare endtoend rush and beat the goal- tender cleanly with a hard wrist shot giving his team the title it was a short season back then with all but the championship games played outdoors wed go from christmas through february he remem bers we played in some pretty sloppy conditions at times daws still credits frank latter the team manager for holdng the team together hed arrange transportation for us to the rink no one had cars those were hard times he re calls frank also looked after the team banquet that and a windbreaker was all the fellows received for playing despite the absence of remun eration daws fondly remembers the good times you had to be a kidder he says those were the 30s you had to make the best of it we were all in the same boat none of us had anything daws managed to stay injury free with the exception of a hurt knee that sidelined him for four games when the team started to fall apart in 1935 daws decided to quit one of nine children he went to work on the family farm on the ninth line south of stouffville he retired in 1963 and moved to town where he became involved coaching junior hockey and nhls keith acton in
