weekender december 19 1987 p editors mail backs mailboxes antiporn bill lauded despite limitations dear editor your paper has been the plat form for many who oppose the su- permailboxes quite honestly i think they are a great idea i rather enjoyed the walk to the corner mailbox several times a week if the weather was bad we just left it for another day weve just temporarily moved from a supermailbox area to an area with home delivery next fall when our new house is com pleted we will again be back to a supermailbox and i look forward to it many people complain about the high cost of mail service but when a costcutting measure is in troduced they balk at that too i support the post office in this plan just as i would endorse any measure to reduce the toohigh cost of government even if it means a small inconvenience to me dj cameron markham nosmoking bylaw gets more support the following is an open letter to the mayor and members of council dear mayor bell i would like to offer my support of amendments to bylaw 19086 adding further public places to the list of where smoking is prohi bited i agree that smokers have the right to indulge themselves but only if no one else is affected by their act we have not reached the point in our society where we are re quired to wear tags indicating our various conditions therefore a smoker cannot know when heshe is in a situation where smoke could be harmful i grew up in a smoking family i chose not to smoke i also choose not to expose myself to second hand smoke i have seen its effects on various friends and family members toxic substances in any form are not permitted for public use the components of smoke are tox ic a fact that cannot be denied- surely in an age where the emphasis is on quality healthful active living we and the powers that be should be able to ensure that the public has every chance to pursue that goal i look forward to smokefree public places in the near future judy diamondsullivan markham we vate individuals and library per- sonel against bill c54 bandying about words like tyrannical and accusing any who support bill c54 as not valuing freedom but what we are talking about is not the freedom of the press or freedom of speech but freedom to pollute we are all screaming pro tests against pollutants floating across our borders to spoil our fields and waterways bill c54 has been mounted as an attack against the media pollutants flooding across our borders the fraser commission re ports an acid rain of 540 diffe rent explicit magazines only three per cent of which are pro duced in canada polluting the infinitely more precious soil of the minds of our youth as well as con taminating the atmosphere for all of us we need to keep in mind the groups who are supporting this bill groups like the feminist anti- violence metrac because the previous antiporn legislation contained no provisions against child pornography nor adequate means to deal with this flood of imports and we need to take note of those who are orchestrating the attack against bill c54 the toronto library board is display ing postcards to be mailed to the prime minister sponsored by the motion picture association of canada the canadian associa tion of video distributors and the periodical marketers of canada the financial stakes must be high metrac reports that the periodical distributors associa tion has commissioned a 900000 a year campaign to fight bill c54 the same sort of campaign that was unleashed in the us to discre dit the attorney generals com mission on pornography give your family a meaningful gift the gift of any member of your family can have combined fun education a special discount package is available to you including the loan of a guitar music and accessories for a limited time only this will enable you to discover your childs true interest without wasting your money on the wrong instrument a note classes are being arranged now to begin next month carlaw coalition of celebrated media liberals who will do most of the work to deflect public percep tion of the publishers own finan cial goals do you think for a minute that this group has any concern for your freedom or mine or is it just their freedom to make money at anyones expense no matter what degredation or brutalizing of women and children is in volved i strongly suspect that what they really want is the unchal lenged right for the media to dic tate the morals of the nation and weve gone a long way to wards surrendering these rights to this illequipped selfseeking group lets not be duped by a slick ad campaign the value and sanctity of human life is what is at stake here in a civilized society man cannot have licence to do any thing he pleases or behave any way he wishes a state where ev ery man has the freedom to do what is right in his own eyes is one in which i would not care to live we must ha ve rules guidelines boundaries in which to function as a free safe society with freedom to pursue our individual and col lective goals of freedom from want freedom from oppression or tyranny and justice for all as a media professional i have no trouble accepting the restric tions of bill c54 1 recognize that if i want to sell i must write with in the boundaries of good taste as defined by the society i choose to work and live in if i dont like the rules here lam free unlike my russian colleagues to leave any time i wish lois neely markham 8555 mccowan rd markham 1mk north of hwy 7 near thabhvay store 4715260 5 glen cameron rd thornhill behind red lobster beside vajdl
