midget coach bill mcknight said the pressure got to both teams and the game was a sloppy affair julie colemans eight- point performance was notable though the girls were really tense going in said mcknight both teams were nervous and it showed in the play it wasnt a very good game we managed to hold on but didnt play as well as we can now that all the hoopla is over mcknight said the team can con centrate on todays york region championship tournament at holy trinity in richmond hill there are six teams at the com petition the top two from the north southeast and southwest divisions theyll be split into two sections with the winners meeting in the final while a lot of the credit for the midget spartans success must go to coaches mcknight and doug walker the excellent coaching staffs at stouffvillearea elementary schools can also share some of the glory since most of the players are in grade nine this was their first season of high school basketball but mcknight said they had obviously been well coached be fore sdss most of the girls were just out of the elementary system and id have to give a lot of credit to the coaches at ballantrae public school in particular he said for mcknight a firstyear elec tronics teacher at sdss this was also his first season of coaching basketball but hes also coaching minor hockey and softball in stouffville i played a little college basket ball and i wasnt sure what approach to take with the team he explained apparently defen sive play used to be the big thing but i stressed scoring and shooting he added that the combination of his emotional style of coaching and doug walkers calm approach the game has also however the key to the teams success ultimately goes to the players mcknight said the girls have worked very hard this year we have good ta lent on this team and without that everything else is meaningless the members of the midget spartans are ann baston sue baston jen barker janine bell julie coleman tammy grove
