the tribune 35000 copies vol 3 no 43 a metroland community newspaper saturday october 31 1987 72 pages 25 cents no health worries study mayor breathes a sigh of relief on tuesday night the mayor and members of whitchurch- stouff ville council breathed a sigh of relief that could be heard all the way to queens park an extensive study the first ever approved by the province shows the hwy 48 landfill site has had no detrimental effect on the health of town residents the studys conclusion states there is little or no evidence that the residents of whitch- urchstouffville are experiencing adverse health outcomes attributable to the proximity of their residence to the now inoperational whitchurchstouffville landfill site and a possi ble exposure to chemical contamination in their drinking water the study wide in its scope examined the health status of the residents of whitchurchstouffville and two comparison com munities the town of east gwillimbury and the township of tecumseh while whitchurchstouffville had a slightly higher reported rate of breast cancer the mortality rate was lower here than all areas examined in ontario and canada there was also a slight increase in selfreported cases of spontaneous abortions in whitchurchstouffville most of the defects reported were not major and are not thought to be associated with chemical contamination the report said statistics show 1 no severe shortterm health conditions 2 no significant increase in the prevalence of most chronic illnesses 3 no significant increase in the prevalance of adverse re productive outcomes since the landfill site is no longer operational ho further followup health survey is necessary for the whitchurch- stouffville area the study suggests monitoring of the water table around the landfill site by the environment ministry should be continued however the re port continues cost of the study is placed at over 600000 all paid for by the ministry of health a question and answer public meeting is scheduled for the high school monday nov 16 at 8 pm dr john hodgkinson associate medical officer of health said the report represents the cooperation of many people over a long period of time dr hodgkinson mentioned specifically the assistance provided by mayor fran sainsbury councillor jim sanders anne gagnon and debi mitchell of the concerned citizens committee mayor sainsbury said the peace of mind the study provides is worth the expense the documentation removes fear of the unknown mrs sainsbury said she said the landfill should never have been located there and should never be reopened theres been a lot of waiting and a lot of worrying she stated mayor sainsburys readily admits shes pleased the report turned out as it did an opposite result would have been dis astroustragic for our town we fought the fight and we won the battle the province kept its promise on the study and the landfill sites been closed i thank god its all in the past she concluded three babes and a bottle model mothers model students and even model babies participated in a unique fashion show oct 22 at whitchurchhighlands public school the wellattended event was sponsored by the parents group in cooperation with two area clothing stores klassy kids of vandorf and graylane of gormley three model children pictured here one with a bottle are left to right melanie runciman lindsay milburn and emily kirstein jim thomas town be for bidders clock work marks time stouif villes clock tower in the town square is a local landmark council fears if repairs- arent completed soon itll become the eighth wonder of the world com parable to italys leaning tower of pisa the base has deteriorated bad ly prompting council to take ac tion and have it rebuilt but the town cant find anyone anxious to do the job tenders for the work closed sept 24 however no bids were recieved this forced council to contact contractors and request prices out of three companies approached only one as con struction ltd of stouffville sub mitted a proposal council agreed that the as firm should do cosmetic repairs now and the balance in the spring of next year mayor fran sainsbury claimed the towers decrepit condition hurts the towns image particu larly during community events like the santa claus parade and the strawberry festival commented engineering co ordinator paul whitehouse isnt it nice to know individuals arent the only ones with prob lems getting work done whats inside abe lincoln gave an address at markham theatre14 caspers in markham read about a haunt ing or two12 and
