kloosterman 78 clears a path for running mate jamie miller 29 while mark stevens 73 finishes off a nice block to open the hole the action took place last thursday against dunbarton of pickering playing at home the seniors went on to win 159 on a lastminute touchdown by kloosterman while the juniors came out on top 3420 alan shackleton loss of two key players hurt sdss volleyballers at tourney by alan shackleton sports editor l injuries took their toll as the stouffville district secondary school sdss senior spartans boys volleyball team was elimin ated in the firstround of the pick ering high school tournament last saturday the spartans went into the tournament without two of their top players paul sinclair with a bad knee and scott evans with an injured hand were both out of action and they were missed said coach jim fletcher that tournament was ours if they had have been healthy he said 1 last tuesday the seniors had beaten pickering high school three games out of five in an ex hibition match prior to the tour ney and fletcher was looking for ward to another shot at them on the weekend the scores from tuesdays match were 1513 1416 157 1015 and 1513 for sdss scott evans and don clearwa- ter played awesome in those games on tuesday fletcher said however without evans who suffered a nonsports related hand injury late last week the spartans were unable to advance out of their very tough pool at the tournament j pickering high school went on to take the tourney title which only had coach fletcher shaking his head about what might have been the seniors got off to a good meeting to save stouffville start saturday with wins over jef fries high school 153 154 and ajax 1513 1715 and then split against port perry 159 715 be fore losing both games to done- van of oshawa 156 1512 though the evans and sinclair injuries obviously hurt the spar tans in pickering fletcher said there is no reason to push the panic button regarding the re mainder of the volleyball season evans could be out for three or four weeks but should be healthy in time for the regional and durhamyork championships but theres no guess on if sinclair will be back well be okay im confident of that fletcher said one or two players a team does not make he added that the subsitutes did an excellent job filling in and there are a number of very talented players on the team wally barbour filled in nicely for scott and did a fine fine job in pickering he explained this whole team can play excellent volleyball don clearwater was once again played superbly and our captain scott rehill had an outstanding tournament in york region league action last week the sdss seniors easily downed king city 150 154 the next home game for the spartans is thursday afternoon against sacred heart by alan shackleton thursday afternoon will be longremembered by uxbridge secondary school uss football fans for a couple of reasons first there was the impressive play of both the junior and senior uss tigers as they came up with big wins over dunbarton of pick ering showing the visitors from the heavilypopulated southern half of durham region how foot ball is played in farm country second there will be the lasting memory of two junior tigers being taken from the field with what looked like serious injuries but thankfully proved to be only minor in the end it was the victories the seniors won 159 and the juniors came out on top 3420 that were remembered most two lengthy touchdown runs on sweeps by halfback grant kloosterman each more than 50 yards led the senior tigers to to the win in what must be consi dered a major upset kloosterman made an out standing run through a lot of traf fic for the winning td with only a minute left in the game the victory was the seniors first of the season after two losses and a tie it was a big win for us senior coach phil mazza said we needed a win like that however while mazza agreed the win was an upset he didnt put it on the same scale as david and goliath dunbarton might have thought it was a big upset but not for us he said weve been im proving all the time dunbarton may have taken the tigers too lightly based mostly on their performance two weeks ago at pickering high school soccer the future of area minor soccer will be decided next tuesday night oct 27 when the whitch- urchstouf fville soccer club holds its annual meeting at the recrea tion centre if enough interested volunteers and parents show up the league will continue next year but if they- dont soccer in stouffville will be a thing of the past you will have the opportunity to say yes or no for soccer in 1988 club president casey van maris said of the meeting in a let ter to the tribune last week new volunteers need to step forward to lighten the load for the present executive he added the present board members will not do it again without these new volunteers last season approximately 155 youngsters enjoyed the benefits of playing for the whitchurch- stouffville soccer club unless some new volunteers get involved with the club those chil dren will be out of luck next year when it comes to playing soccer in this town the meeting begins at 8 pm on tuesday oct 27 in the recreation centre on ninth line north stouffville if you care about kids soccer in whitchurchstouffville please plan to attend grant klossterman two tds where they were easily beaten 29- 6 obviously they scouted us at that game because they kept run ning at the left side of our defence where we had some injuries and were weak against pickering mazza said but we had our starters back for dunbarton and they found the going wasnt so easy they thought they could beat us there but they couldnt gutsy defence in fact the defence won the game for the seniors by holding up dunbarton drives near the goal line on more than one occasion late in the first quarter after gaining great field position when the snap from centre sailed over the punters head dunbarton drove to a first down on the ux bridge 12 before the tiger defence slammed the door shut on them dunbarton went backwards on three straight plays then had their field goal attempt on fourth down blocked the same situation occured to end the half with the tiger de fence stopping dunbarton at the ten and forcing them to punt for a single point on the final play be fore the whistle the seniors offence woke up to start the second half and a good kick off return by jamie miller helped set up a solid first posses sion which culminated in the first of kloostermans long touch downs on a sweep to the left side the tigers went for a twopoint conversion after the major and were successful on scott blairs run into the end zone to take an 81 lead another terrible punt caused in part by the snap that bounced at least once on its way to the kicker in the fourth quarter gave dun barton outstanding field position at the uxbridge 18 with first down and goal from the four the tigers stuffed dun barton twice in a row on running plays and it appeared they might come up with another great goal line stand however dunbarton wisely gave up on running at the tiger line and instead threw over them kris elson scary injury for a touchdown followed by a pass for a twopoint conversion to go ahead 98 yet another defensive stand af ter the offence fumbled on their first drive after the touchdown set up kloostermans run for the winner with time running out while the juniors put in an ex cellent offensive performance in their 3420 win the effort was almost overshadowed by what appeared to be very serious in juries to two of their players in the first half jason melko went out with a bad knee while kris elson left the field on a stretcher and was rushed to hospital by ambulance with a neck injury at the time he didnt have a lot of feeling in his lower body and medics were taking no chances as they imobilized him before head ing to the hospital fortunately the injury was not serious and elson is back in school though he does still have a stiff neck it was an extremely scary situation for a while said junior coach brian manorek when anybody gets hurt in the neck youre always uptight and when he left the field we didnt know how serious it was with melkos knee injury there was the fear of torn ligaments but it proved to be only twisted both melko and elson had run for first half touchdowns to give the tigers a 1312 lead at half time the tigers exploded for three touchdowns in a row in the second half to put the game out of reach offensive end dave martin scored two majors in the third quarter to secure the win the first was on a pass from quarterback ianwitucki and that opened the floodgates two series later martin picked up a fumbled dunbarton punt re turn and ran it in for six running back mike klose closed out the ti ger touchdown parade with a dash into the end zone the boys who filled in after jason and kris were hurt did an outstanding job manorek said sean stokes whos a linebacker and hadnt played halfback be fore and mike klose were excel lent parents participation urged in minor ball the whitchurchstouffville minor softball association will hold its
