p20 weekender october 17 1987 uxbridge football tigers get tamed by alan shackleton the uxbridge junior tigers learned the hard way that the key to winning football games is taking advantage of the other teams mis takes every error the tigers made in last weeks durham region high school match in pickering was seized upon as the boys from uxbridge secondary school uss went down to a 4028 defeat we didnt play that badly we got off to a good start in the game said junior coach brian manorek pickering is a tough team we just made some mistakes in this one and they were able to capitalize on them the juniors took an early 70 lead on their first possession of the game but sloppy play on the special teams soon relinquished the lead and put pickering in the drivers seat a poor punt return hemmed the tigers deep in their own end and gave pickering excellent field position to drive in for the tying major on the ensuing kick off the juniors fumbled to set up the goahead score for pickering its a very good team he added i thought we didnt look out of place against them and their coach said he was impressed with us it was just that we made too many mistakes jason melko with a pair of touchdowns led the tiger scoring attack while other majors went to kris elson and jason eddy the loss put the juniors record at 12 with three games left in the season after winning their debut against donevan handily the juniors have had some bad luck including an interception return in the last two minutes by henry st to beat them 60 that loss in the last minutes hurt but i dont think it put the team behind the eightball manorek said weve been playing good foot ball but havent had a lot of breaks i think the team is coming along very well the fortunes of the senior tigers werent any better in pickering as they lost 296 injuries took a toll on the left side of the starting defence said coach phil mazza and pickering was able to exploit this weakness at will the tigers lone score came late in the fourth quarter on a halfback sweep by grant kloosterman from two yards out the loss gave the senior tigers a record of no wins one tie and two defeats this season the junior and senior tigers next home games and final contests of the regular season are friday oct 30 against paul d wyer of oshawa bbbatua mmbvsjs plumbing gas services inc specializing in industrial commercial
