u t weekender october 10 188741 thankful for freedom and faith all of the family was there we sat shoulder to shoulder around the enlarged dining table steam rose slowly from the various bowls which promised to satisfy every appetite the large golden brown turkey filled the room with an aroma that would be surpassed only by its taste every head was bowed as my grandfather led his family in grace and a prayer of thank sgiving dear heavenly father we thank you today for faith and for family friends fellowship and food amen as eager hands began to load their dinner plates i looked lovingly to the head of the table i saw a man now in his 80s who for 50 years had served as a minister and missionary i recalled that in the summer of 1936 he had left his position of principal of a school in saskatch ewan and with his wife and their lively 3yearold my father had from the pulpit jllaxfifiam pitzcoitat cfmji set sail for distant africa to share the love of god with the people of the dark continent as it was then known years of experience and wisdom had condensed into one sentence the truth and emotion of this holiday season i recall that prayer fairly fre quently and am constantly chal lenged by its contents im glad it begins with faith everything hinges on our faith in god that faith is made possible through the gift of gods son jesus christ he is gods greatest gift to mankind faith in jesus christ brings us into a personal relationship with god as our heavenly father and is the most important thing any one could experience the assur ance in this life of sins forgiven peace with god and with our fel low man are accompanied by a continuous inner joy this gives life real purpose and meaning then of course there are the fu ture benefits of a home in heaven and eternity with the lord a liv ing faith in god causes a heart to be filled with thanks life would be very lonely with out family and friends life con sists of relationships with other people people who love us and care about us people who share lifes high and low points with us albert schweitzer wrote when i look back upon my early days i am stirred by the thought of the number of people whom i have to thank for what they gave me or what they were to me at the same time i am haunted by an oppres sive consciousness of the little gratitude i really showed them while i was young how many of them have said farewell to life without my having made clear to them what it meant to me to receive from them so much kindness or so much care many a time have i with a feeling of shame said quietly to myself over a grave the words which my mouth ought to have spoken to the departed while he was still in the flesh fellowship is more than friendship it springs from a com mon bond or shared interest those who desire to serve and worship god love to help and buikl each other up we sing together worship together learn together pray together and cry together we need each other how thankful we are for this country where we are free and unrestricted to love and serve god together the story is told that morale was low among the first settlers of the new world it was proposed in one of the local churches that they proclaim a fast an old farmer- stood and spoke of how they would anger god with their complaints he reviewed gods mercies showed them how much they had to be thankful for and moved that instead of a day of fasting they should appoint a day of thanksgiv ing today we applaud his wis dom and insight centennial baptist church 8252 mccowan rd south pastor harvey peters youth pastor ken
