drive markham is home again much improved after spending twelve days in hospital near lake placid new york prior to mov ing to markham mrs ratcliff re sided on the east side of hwy 48 near the bloomington road markham clarence mcdowell lived a full and reward ing life a life that touched all areas of the community his involvement was appreci ated as indicated by the numbers in attendance at the funeral ser vice sept 10 in markham mission ary church following his passing sept 7 in scarborough general hospital he was 76 born at lot 15 cone 6 mar kham twp the son of wesley and olive penny mcdowell he was a selfeducated man who gleaned much information through love of literature he applied this knowledge to farming using innovative prac tices to improve both crops and livestock he farmed on the 7th and 10th concessions of markham then cone 2 uxbridge following re tirement since 1977 he had lived on franklin street in markham clarence mcdowell and katherine moyer were married jan 31 1942 to the union was born three sons jim of nigeria stephen of leamington and mar tin of stouffville two daughters marian mrs david sloss of new dundee and judith mrs ronald gooding of markham there are 14 grandchildren mark and laura mcdowell andrew timothy michael and jennifer sloss rhonda danny melissa and joel gooding wesley katie and jonathan mcdowell and jocelyn mcdowell a brother robert lives in ux bridge he was predeceased in 1970 by a sister florence fennell mr mcdowell served as a pub lic school trustee on the board of the stouffville cooperative and the stouffville and district credit union and in the work of the mennonite brethern in christ church and the markham mis sionary church it was association with the church that provided him much personal joy and satisfaction he held many positions within the congregation including that of sunday school teacher his activ ity within the church spanned 70 of his 76 years mr mcdowells interests also tended towards music art and travel he had visited his fore fathers native scotland and had traced the familys roots back to 1742 rev sloss spoke of these things in his message death with a difference he told how mr mcdowell had completed the writing of his own life story a documentary to be treasured by family generations through the years what a marvellous heritage said mr sloss he set an exam ple for all of us rev sloss was assisted by rev harold boadway pastor myles toop and at the grave site by rev arthur walsh special music was provided by vocalist david sloss of new dundee accompa nied by doris pilkey at the organ pallbearers were roger and richard fennell jonathan and david moyer glenn michaelis and richard hawkins interment was made at dicksons hill cemetery st james bazaar st james
