are missed dear editor -j- as you are quite aware another hockey season has started at the wmtchurchstouffville rec centre i have been a regular customer there for years and i must say i was very surprised to fold our two fine ladies betty grove and mary moff att had not yet returned it was a pleasure to share a conversation with them on saturdays or any day i found i had to sit in a cold damp arena to watch my boys play hockey i hope and know this was the feeling of a lot of people in this town and im sure they were as shaken as i when no coffee or pop was available to us or more importantly to the players missing also were the warm greetings from betty and mary its unfortunate we have to suffer due to a possible break down in communication or lack of consideration for ones fellow town employees im sure something could have been done over the last two weeks of no snack bar service either by the rec centre office staff or one of the daytime employees of the town a little overtime would have kept the parents and children of minor hockey happy come on people bend a little swallow your pride or ill- feeling thats brewing at the town office and rec centre keep the stouffville people happy we feel were worth it certainly our children deserve better treatment on behalf of many minor hockey moms and dads i say thank you to betty and mary sincerely marianne glover start by bruce stapley stouffville when gary fraser moved to stouffville 17 years ago he set out to add some local color to his albert street north home the logical place to start he thought was in the va rious flower beds that surrounded the centuryold house it must be my scottish blood but i considered it a whole lot cheaper to grow my own flowers than buy them says gary what started out as a penny- pinching endeavor has become a labor of love for the science teacher at king city secondary school he thinks he may have in herited his everwidening interest in flowergrowing from his grand father my grandfather operated a very successful florist business in barrie for many years he ex plains the more i got into it the more i enjoyed it a drive past the home of gary and liz fraser and family during the summer months affords viewers a beautiful mixture of geraniums begonias petunias and marigolds in assorted shades of red orange pink salmon mauve and yellow the flower beds are filled along with various pots and hanging baskets the railings on the back deck accommodate even more flowers the overall effect when com bined with mature trees one grown from a single chestnut back billboard on main street west old the world of the happy event thomas natural beauty in an established setting for gary it all started with the purchase of several secondhand f lourescent lights that he set up in the basement he then went out and lined up cuttings and seeds the seeds he starts in the dark he then transfers them to an area under the lights since the beginning gary has refined his operation discovering ways and means of achieving bet ter results with less effort he now brings in his cuttings in mid- october and sets them under the lights i dont use a timer gary ex plains that might encourage lazyness by visiting them every morning and night i know im looking after them properly more new flowers are started in january and february they all are transplanted outside by may 24 after the fear of frost is gone gary maintains the growing of flowers has taught him lessons he can apply to the teaching of scien ce in the classroom the main thing ive disco vered he explains with a grin is that living things dont do what you want them to do when you want them to do it therefore he must discipline himself the plants train you he says they tell you when they need to be watered to be pruned to be fed even when they must be put to bed if you dont do it their way they wont develop the way youd like gary has found his flowers to be a natural source of material for that part of the science program that deals with vegetative repro duction not only arc the students very interested in observing the flowers growth but it provides him more area to grow new flow ers once hes used up all the space in his basement many students he says have begun growing their own flowers as a result of seeing his efforts gary hopes some day to have his very own greenhouse he sees himself following in his fathers footsteps in a limited way i realize maintaining a green house takes a lot of time but sometime i hope to have one he states determinedly however for now garys con tent to keep his
