to spend her summer vacation helping mal nourished children in africa lit tle did she know shed find her self in the middle of a coup we went to the beach one afternoon and while on our way back were stopped by soldiers she explains everybody started joking that maybe there had been a coup when we got home we turned on the radio but all it played was military music until the bbc announced there had been one according to tammy at no time were her or her travelling companions in danger but their plane was delayed for nine days peaceful it was always peaceful after curfew although i had expected to see a lot more soldiers she says i think the people if not satisfied didnt really object to the change all that much while tammy admits the coup was exciting she claims it paled in comparison to her summers activities helping malnourished children on june 13 tammy left for zaire with girlfriend kathy pat rick whose father a doctor was on a yearlong sabbatical to study malnutrition and aids in that country i met kathy at a pioneer camp for special needs children last summer she says she told me about the trip and i thought it sounded like a great idea on to zaire spending two days in amster dam a week in england and five more in kenya tammy and the patricks stopped over in nairobi so dr patrick could lecture at a local university then left for zaire once there they embarked on a series of weekly clinics where they travelled from village to vil lage weighing and measuring world calibre riding c3 children and noting their arm cir cumferences by doing this we were able to graph and plot all the children and see what percentage of them were malnourished she says however this was only a a small portion of tammys respon sibilities while there she also participated in a refeeding prog ram for severly malnourished children in hospital bad off if the children were really bad off when they came in they were immediatly started on an oral re hydration solution she says this helped their bodies function normally again they were then put back into the hands of their parents for the remainder of their feeding tammy says she was responsi ble for providing the children with certain amounts of milk five times daily to replenish protein and vitamins lacking in their diets however while rewarding to help the few children she could tammy claims many did die wonderful experience the most wonderful experience i had with this program involved a little girl i looked after for two months she says for the longest time she didnt respond to treatment then all of a sudden she blossomed into this beautiful little girl when she came in she was so thin and sat there so quiet but now shes laughing and smiling in early september tammy and the patrick family left for bu- jumbra where they were to meet a plane for the homeward leg of their journey we were supposed to be there on thursday but we went in on monday so we could take some children to school she says it was a good thing too because we couldnt have gotten in after the coup while tammy buttt admits the coup in bujumbra was exciting she claims it pales in comparison to her summers activities helping malnourished children here she shows off an african bracelet souvenir of her stay in zaire denise mcdonald lost luggage returning home sept 13 after the nineday delay tammy
