firm believer in the infinite capacity for artistic expression in children the secret in appreciating kids art she says is to tune in to their unrestricted imaginations and see the subject matter as the child sees it with such a strong feeling for the quality of childrens artwork it is no wonder that barb will be heading up the school childrens exhibit at the markham fair for the fifth time this year it takes a special kind of per son to appreciate kids art she says half of our committee is made up of teachers or ex- teachers people who have come to see the depth of expression in the artistic efforts of kids carpef care steam cleaning carpets upholstery machine stays in truck only hoses in your house all work guaranteed serving the area for 9 years 25 off all carpet cleaning clean up those all the different categories schools from as far away as east york have been asked to compete and will do so both on a class level and on an individual basis each spring we send out a kit to about 90 schools she explains we tell them the types of things we are looking for give them prize lists and tags the response is always good the arts and crafts are geared to different age levels for inst ance there could be finger paint ing for kindergarten kids right through apple faced dolls for the grade 8s items such as book marks seem to attract kids im aginations and there are always many on display only the winning entries go on display in the general exhibit building barb explains there are just too many to be able to show them all all entries must be submitted by the saturday before the fair except in the case of entries made of natural materials which must be in by the wednesday before the fair begins there are two judges and prizes include cash as well as ribbons some of the kids are surprised to find out that they stand to win real money for their efforts one girl won around 90 last year but the biggest kick for the kids themselves she says is coming to the childrens exhibit and seeing how many prizes were won by kids from their own school people they know each year an attempt is made to introduce new categories so as to keep up with the times the committee is always open to feed back from teachers last year it was noted by one teacher that we had nothing in french barb recalls so we de cided to have a french poem category we have introduced some future and space re lated themes as well one of the more popular categories last year was one where the grade 7 and 8 students designed long playing re cord covers classes will submit murals featuring such topics as super heroes there are fall door de corations toilet paper creations clothes pin dolls a jackolantern category and a writing and print ing category at last years fair barb recalls the fun generated by the scarecrow display all the scarecrows were set up in one area the markham fair clown was all dressed up like a scarecrow and he would sit on a bale of straw among the real scarecrows he would stare at the kids then suddenly move his eyes one way or the other the kids would howl with delight barb encourages teachers from all schools to come to the fair and take an interest in the exhibit she sees it as a great way of getting students who are new to the area involved and interested in the fair working on displays either as a class or individually gives the teacher a forum to work from to get the kids involved barb is somewhat disappointed that the york region school board has changed the pd day usually on the friday of the fair to the following monday having a pd day on the friday gave more kids the opportunity to come to the fair i hope they go back to the old format next year but shes still more than opti mistic that this years exhibit will be wellattended and well- received for arts sake
